🚨WEATHER SIREN INFORMATION – CITY OF MT. VERNON EMA 🚨

The City of Mt. Vernon EMA would like to clarify the outdoor warning sirens and lightning detection announcements at city parks.

⚑ Only the TWO (2) park sirens will sound for lightning detection.

πŸ—£οΈ These sirens provide a voice-only announcement regarding lightning in the area.

πŸ“’The lightning announcement feature was originally activated on all city sirens. Following resident feedback about frequent activations during regular storms, the feature was removed from all other sirens and remains active only at the parks.

πŸ”ŠThe park sirens and volume levels have not changed. They are the same sirens that have always been in place, with the addition of the lightning voice announcement feature.

⏰ The lightning detection system is only active during park hours.

β›ˆοΈ After a lightning announcement is made, the system enters a 15-minute reset period before monitoring for lightning again. This helps prevent repeated activations during ongoing storms.

βœ… Once no lightning has been detected for 30 minutes, the system will broadcast an β€œall clear” announcement.

🚨 During Tornado Warnings and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, ALL outdoor warning sirens throughout the city will sound and provide a voice announcement identifying the warning.

🌩️ Severe Thunderstorm Warnings will only activate the outdoor warning siren system when the warning includes threats of destructive winds at or above 70 MPH.

πŸ“’ This activation policy was updated following resident feedback about sirens sounding too frequently during non-destructive storms.

πŸ“‘ All severe weather alerts are automatically activated through the National Weather Service.

πŸ”Š Outdoor warning sirens are intended to alert individuals who are outdoors to seek shelter and monitor weather conditions. Because they are designed primarily for outdoor warning purposes, they may not always be heard indoors.
Residents are encouraged to use additional weather alert methods such as weather radios, smartphone alerts, and local media to stay informed during severe weather.

You can also learn more about the city’s warning sirens and hear the different siren sounds on the city website:
