Did you know the story of Mount Vernon’s military history began long before the Arsenal walls were built?

Before the Mount Vernon Arsenal was established in 1828, nearby Fort Stoddert served as one of the most important military posts on the early American frontier. Located along the Mobile River, the fort helped protect the region, supported military operations during the Creek War, and played an important role in the early development of what would become Alabama.

As military operations expanded, troops gradually shifted to the higher ground at Mount Vernon. The move offered healthier conditions away from the river swamps and led to the establishment of military camps and barracks years before the formal Arsenal was constructed.

What started as frontier defense eventually evolved into the Mount Vernon Arsenal, later military barracks, and eventually the site many know today as Searcy Hospital.

From frontier fort… to arsenal… to hospital… this land has nearly 230 years of stories to tell.

Did you know Geronimo once lived right here in Mount Vernon as a prisoner of war?

In 1887, after surrendering to the U.S. Army in Arizona, Geronimo and hundreds of Apache men, women, and children were transported across the country by train and eventually brought to the historic Mount Vernon Barracks — now part of the property many know today as the Searcy Hospital grounds.

The Apache prisoners remained in Mount Vernon for several years. During that time, some were allowed under military supervision to travel into Mobile to sell handmade crafts, beadwork, bows, and arrows to local residents. Geronimo himself became a well-known figure throughout the region during his stay.

The Mount Vernon Barracks was originally established as a military post long before the hospital era, and stories like this are part of the deep and layered history that still surrounds the property today.
