FYI.... We need to share some Important news with you. This will be lengthy but informative. Last August 2025 the Insurance Service Organization (ISO) was here to evaluate the fire dept. Why should you care? Our rating directly reflects what you pay on your homeowners insurance premiums. Some insurance companies use the ISO rating system and some do not. ISO rates fire depts from a Class 1 (highest) through Class 10 (lowest). This rating takes into account operations, staffing, 911 emergency communication center and the water supply in the fire district. Points are given for each category and totaled for your fina rating.
We we notified of our new rating in January. This new rating took effect May 1, 2026... We are happy to report to you that we moved from Class 3/3Y to a Class 2/2Y. In the rating report, in 2025 there were approximately 502 fire departments country wide with a Class 1 rating. There were only 2,109 Class 2 fire departments in the country. We joined the Class 2 group๐!
What does all this mean? If you live in the Mt. Washington Fire Protection District youโre either going to be a Class 2 or a Class 2Y. If your home or commercial buisness is within 5 road miles of one of our fire houses and within 1,000 feet of a fire hydrant you are a Class 2. If you are within 5 road miles of one of our fire houses but greater than a 1,000 feet from a fire hydrant you are a Class 2Y.
Like I said earlier some insurance companies do not use the ISO grading system, but most do. You need to call and ask your insurance carrier if they use the ISO grading system. If so, ask them what do they have the fire department rated at. Our last rating was a Class 3/3Y. Some home owners were being charged at a Class 6/6Y.. that was wrong. You need to tell them you should be receiving the Class 2/2Y rating.
Our fire district is 42 square Miles. It includes the City of MT. Washington, Hwy 44 from the Spencer Co line to Halls Lane and back Halls lane. Then on Bardstown Road at the Jefferson Co line south to the Salt River Bridge. Then we cover Deer Wood Subdivision. We cover Kings Church Road all the way to Dale's lane and then take a left and go to the Spencer Co line. Basically the eastern portion of Bullitt County starting at Halls lane and head east.
If you are unsure if you live in our fire district, this is what you need to do. Do not send messages in messenger on here. Do not ask questions in the comments section below. Why? Because we are not always on Facebook and it may take a hot minute to get your answers back to you.
