Like many municipalities, we receive questions and complaints regarding e-bikes, e-scooters, electric skateboards, and other micromobility devices. These devices have increased in popularity in recent years, and Illinois law continues to evolve regarding their use.

# # # SAFETY REMINDER FOR PARENTS AND RIDERS

Parents, please remind your children to follow the rules of the road when operating e-bikes, e-scooters, and other micromobility devices on public streets.

These devices can be difficult for motorists to see, and we have experienced several close calls involving riders and vehicles. Riders should remain alert, obey traffic laws, and use appropriate safety equipment. We strongly encourage the use of helmets, protective pads, and other safety gear.

Some of these devices are capable of reaching speeds of 30 mph or more, making safe operation especially important.

# # # IMPORTANT REMINDER FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE E-BIKE AND E-SCOOTER OWNERS

Illinois has implemented new statewide regulations affecting electric bicycles, e-scooters, and other micromobility devices. Additional regulations and operational requirements will take effect on **January 1, 2027**.

Depending on the type and speed of the device, the new requirements may include minimum age restrictions and, in some cases, a valid driver's license.

If you currently own or are considering purchasing an e-bike, e-scooter, electric skateboard, or other micromobility device, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with the applicable Illinois laws and regulations.

**Please ride responsibly, follow the rules of the road, and help us keep our streets safe for everyone.**

ITS BACK TO SCHOOL TIME! Just a couple friendly reminders.

If you use W. Main Street in Mt. Zion during your morning commute, expect heavy traffic between 7:20am and 8:20am. During the first month of school traffic is often at a standstill for a short time during this hour. Allow yourself an extra 10 to 15 minutes.

Keep an extra eye out for kids walking or riding bikes before and after school. Be aware of crosswalks on W. Main in front of MTZ Grade and and on W. Main at Bell Street, Broadway, and Braves Parkway.

Watch out for school busses especially in residential neighborhoods. In Illinois, passing a school bus while the stop arm is extended could result in a suspension of your driver's license. Remind new or inexperienced drivers in your family to be cautions around school busses as well.

Have a safe first day of school.

This key fob was found in the road at the intersection of Harryland and Baltimore a few days ago by a Mt. Zion resident. It is now at the MZPD. 217-864-4012

The MZPD is investigating criminal damage to the Mt. Zion Convention Center. On July 3rd at around10:30pm unknown persons used an explosive or firecracker to damage the roof and gutter system on the east side of the Convention Center. Immediately after the explosion a vehicle was spotted driving at a high rate of speed through the parking lot and leaving using the south exit.

We are continuing to follow up on some leads, but are also asking for the publics help. The repair cost are expected to exceed $5,000. If you have any information please contact Detective Corey Janes at the MZPD, 217 864 4012.

We'd like to welcome the newest addition to the Mt. Zion Police Department, Officer Adam DeJaynes. Officer DeJaynes comes to us as an accomplished certified officer with 14 years of experience. He brings with him training and numerous certifications including: Field Training Officer, Crisis Intervention, Railroad Accident Response, School Resource Officer, and Basic Detective Training. He has also been recognized by MADD and AIMM for his accomplishments in DUI Enforcement.

The annual Blue Ribbon Night will be held on Friday, July 3, 2026 at Fletcher Park (323 Fletcher Park Blvd.) GATES OPEN AT 5PM AND ENTRY IS FREE. Fireworks will begin shortly after dusk.

Please note the traffic plan for vehicles leaving Fletcher Park after the fireworks. Have a safe night!

-The orange lines indicate the placement of barricades

-Vehicles exiting Fletcher Park will be directed East toward Braves Parkway

-Vehicles entering W. Main from Braves Parkway will be directed East onto State Hwy 121

-Vehicles entering W Main from Henderson Street will be directed West onto Main Street and then North onto Broadway

-Vehicles leaving the high school parking lot using Bell Street will be directed to continue North past W. Main Street or West onto W. Main Street.

-Vehicles leaving the Junior High school will be directed south on Henderson, detour signs will be in place with directions to State Hwy 121 and Decatur.

- Pedestrians crossing W. Main Street are encouraged to do so at the 400 block of W. Main by the US Post Office.
