***NOTICE***

Elmore County Mosquito Abatement has collected additional West Nile virus-positive mosquito samples in the Hammett area. This is in addition to samples collected in the Chattin Flats area and in Glenns Ferry. ECMA personnel have treated many sites throughout Hammett, Glenns Ferry and Chattin Flats and additional fogging applications will be made.

PLEASE HELP US!
We are asking any constituents that have stock water tanks to regularly empty and refill the tanks to ensure they are not producing mosquitoes. Stock watering tanks and troughs are major contributors to the production of the types of mosquitoes that transmit West Nile virus. If the stock tanks are unable to be emptied and refilled regularly, please contact Elmore County Mosquito Abatement and personnel will treat the tanks to ensure they won't produce mosquitoes. Elmore County Mosquito Abatement only uses products that are labeled for stock tank treatments, and ensures the products are safe for livestock and equine watering sources.

To reduce the risk of exposure to West Nile virus:
DRAIN any standing water around homes and property. Any water that stands for longer than 3-5 days can produce mosquitoes. Regularly change and clean horse and stock water troughs.
DRESS appropriately when mosquitoes are most active. Mosquitoes are most active at dusk, early night hours, and at dawn. Light colored long sleeve shirts and pants are recommended.
DEFEND against mosquitoes by using an effective insect repellant containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or 2-undecanone, making sure to follow the directions on the container.
VACCINATE horses annually for the best way to protect from West Nile virus.

Please contact ECMA by calling 208-587-2154 or by email at [email protected] if a site is too large to be eliminated so it can be properly treated.

Thank you for your help and assistance as we continue to fight the bite together!

World Mosquito Day is observed annually on August 20th to commemorate Sir Ronald Ross's 1897 discovery that female Anopheles mosquitoes transmitted Malaria between humans. This discovery fundamentally changed our understanding of disease transmission and forever linked mosquito control operations with public health protection.

There is still relevancy today in the wake of Ross's discovery. In Elmore County, West Nile virus is the mosquito-borne disease of current times. Artificial containers, watering troughs and stock tanks, and other backyard larval mosquito production sites continue to be the most difficult for Elmore County Mosquito Abatement to control effectively.

Just as it was in Ross's day, we need the public's help in eliminating as many of these sites as possible to limit the spread of mosquito-borne disease.

Join us in celebrating World Mosquito Day by dumping, draining, and drying up areas in your backyards and help us create a mosquito-free community.

Please contact us by calling 208-587-2154 or by email at [email protected] to request our assistance in eliminating mosquitoes on your property.

Thank you!!
