Navy aircraft mishap clean-up efforts continue

SILVERDALE, Wash. – The Navy’s recovery and response efforts following the May 17 aircraft mishap during an airshow at Mountain Home Air Force Base required a portion of Highway 167 in Idaho to be closed temporarily for the public’s safety and to facilitate access for response crews.

The Navy team completed aircraft wreckage removal and is working as quickly as possible while remaining deliberate and careful in their efforts to remove potentially hazardous materials from the roadway and surrounding landscape.

The clean-up effort is nearing completion. The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality has approved backfilling of the site, allowing contractors to begin repaving the highway. The Navy anticipates the highway will be reopened within two weeks, pending paving contractor scheduling.

The Navy knows this clean-up effort and road closure is impacting the community and thanks the community for their understanding throughout this work. The Navy also thanks state and local agencies for their assistance.

Updated information will be provided as it becomes available.

This email are the reasons provided by Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) as to why people may not have received the alerts during the fire the other night.

Initially a Reverse911 was requested and sent out immediately. It was sent as soon as the request came in. The problem with Reverse911 is only people with landlines will receive the alert. We believe there were only 19 phone numbers it was initially being sent to.

Dispatch then sent out an alert using IPAWS.

Below are the maps for the location the alerts were sent out using Reverse 911 and IPAWS.

Here are the main reasons why you might not receive an IPAWS Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) even if you're within the alert area:

Device & Hardware Limitations
• Your phone doesn't support WEA (older devices, especially pre-2012)
• WEA alerts are turned off in your device settings (Presidential alerts aside, most can be disabled)
• Your phone is powered off, in airplane mode, or has a dead battery
• Your device is in Do Not Disturb mode (on some older OS versions this could suppress alerts)

Network & Carrier Issues

• Your phone is roaming on a foreign carrier's network that doesn't support WEA
• You're connected to Wi-Fi calling only, with no active cellular registration
• Your carrier doesn't participate in WEA (very rare today but possible with some MVNOs or international SIMs)
• Network congestion preventing the broadcast channel from being received properly

RF & Signal Issues

• You're in a basement, underground, or a building with heavy RF shielding (concrete, steel, etc.)
• You're in a cellular dead zone or fringe coverage area
• The cell tower serving your location wasn't included in the broadcast geo-targeting
• Interference from physical structures blocking the broadcast signal
• Any other reason that might cause your phone to not receive a message

Geographic Targeting Issues

• WEA uses cell tower broadcast, not GPS — if your nearest tower is outside the alert polygon, you may not receive it
• Conversely, towers inside the polygon may not reach you if you're near the boundary
• The alerting authority may have drawn the polygon imprecisely
• Cell tower placement doesn't map perfectly to geographic boundaries

Timing Issues

• Your device was temporarily off the network (reboot, update, etc.) during the brief broadcast window
• WEA messages broadcast for a limited time; if your phone wasn't connected to a tower during that window, it won't receive it retroactively

Mountain Home Brush Fire

Mountain Home, Idaho
A brush fire was reported to the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office via 911 at 6:58 pm on Tuesday, May 27, 2026. The fire was in the area of Airbase Road and Southwest Flyby Avenue.

Since the morning press release, law enforcement and first responders have been working diligently to further assess the situation. It is confirmed that all citizens who lost their homes due to the fire have been accounted for. This is a testament to the swift and coordinated efforts of our emergency response teams and the cooperation of our community members.

The investigation into the cause of the fire continues. The state fire marshal is working with fire investigators and other relevant authorities to determine the origin and cause of the fire.. All road closures in the area have been reopened for local residents.

Our priority is to ensure that everyone impacted has the support they need during this challenging time. Community resources remain available for those who have been displaced. These resources include temporary housing, food and clothing assistance, and counseling services. If you need assistance, please reach out to the Red Cross Duty Officer at 406-215-1514.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to the brave men and women of our fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and all first responders who worked tirelessly to control the fire and ensure the safety of our citizens” said Elmore County Sheriff Hollinshead.
