A message from the Borough of Mountain Lakes in relation to the recent storm cleanup:

"Please place storm debris at the curb for pickup by Mountain Lakes DPW crews.

Only natural vegetation will be collected, including tree branches and limbs. Debris must be cut into sections no longer than 4 feet. DPW crews will collect debris during regular work hours, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Crews will pass through all streets several times during the coming week, so items that are not placed out immediately will still be picked up.

Natural vegetation debris may also be brought to the DPW Recycling Facility during regular Recycling Center hours: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

As a reminder, grass clippings will not be picked up and may not be disposed of at the Recycling Center."

**STORM UPDATE**

Last night’s storms brought down numerous trees and power lines throughout town. Our DPW crews responded overnight and were able to clear several roadways of fallen trees. However, multiple trees remain down due to live wires entangled in or around them.

JCP&L crews are aware of the situation and are working to address downed wires throughout the area. At this time, JCP&L has not been able to respond to our town yet.

We are aware that residents on Esplanade, Pollard Road, and Crystal Road are currently unable to move their vehicles around fallen trees and wires. We understand the inconvenience this is causing and appreciate everyone's patience as utility crews work to make the area safe. PLEASE DO NOT APPROACH LIVE WIRES.

Please continue to monitor this page for updates. If you have questions or need assistance, contact our non-emergency line at (973) 334-1413.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

May 2026 Blotter

SUSPICIOUS INCIDENT/PURSUIT

On May 4th, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Patrolman Borst, on his way home following his normal patrol shift, observed a black BMW sedan with a Pennsylvania license plate run the stop sign exiting Tower Hill Road onto Boulevard. The vehicle then proceeded down Boulevard in a suspicious manner, traveling slowly and sporadically stopping in front of several residences along the roadway.

Patrolman Borst relayed this information to on-duty Patrolman Pierre, who subsequently located the black BMW sedan on Lake Drive. After Patrolman Pierre positioned his patrol vehicle behind the vehicle, the driver accelerated away at a high rate of speed. Patrolman Pierre initiated a motor vehicle stop; however, the vehicle failed to stop and fled the area. A pursuit ensued onto Route 287 South, where Patrolman Pierre ultimately lost sight of the suspect vehicle.

Later that same day, a resident responded to police headquarters and provided video footage of a suspicious incident involving the same black BMW sedan. The footage showed the vehicle stopping in front of the resident’s home in the hill section of town. One of the occupants exited the vehicle, entered the driveway, and began looking into parked vehicles before being startled and fleeing upon hearing the resident’s Ring camera notification.

Further investigation revealed that the same vehicle and suspects were involved in an attempted residential burglary in Bergen County the day prior. In that incident, the suspects reportedly used a crowbar to forcibly open the rear windows of a residence.

An investigation is ongoing at this time.
