Old Time Print Shop

Old Time Print Shop Letterpress printing The result of those demonstrations was a collection of carefully printed note cards and note pads. I am proud to continue the tradition.

When the Old Time Print Shop was established at the Ozark Folk Center State Park in 1981, a goal was set to interpret traditional letterpress printing to the visitors of the park. Artists from the park and community submitted drawings from which "print blocks" called cuts were produced. These illustrations were paired with hand set type acquired from print shops, newspapers and individuals. The ty

pe had been used in the shops, but was becoming obsolete as composition transitioned to computerized. We continue to use these wonderful antique typefaces and original cuts to print the cards and pads offered at the OTPS. Because of their age, you will notice slight imperfections in some of the print. We demonstrate the process of make-ready, which was historically used to equalize the impression, and minimize these faults. Many interpreters, volunteers and apprentices over the years have contributed to preserving the craft of letterpress printing and producing this unique product at the OTPS.

Thanks to all the folks that came from near and far to start their New Year with us at the Ozark Folk Center!

This crew hiked the Whitewater Creek Trail from the historic stone amphitheater in Mountain View to our Visitor Center and toured the Craft Village & Heritage Herb Garden - They even did a lil' square dancing on stage at Ozark Highlands Theater!

It was a wonderful way to start the year. And we couldn't have asked for a better group to share it with! Happy New Year!
