On Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 3:26 p.m., a 9-1-1 call was received reporting flames coming from a dumpster and overhead trees to the rear of a commercial building in the 1000 block of Grant Road.

Fire units were dispatched at 3:27 p.m. and arrived on the scene at 3:30 p.m. On arrival fire crews found flames inside and around an enclosure containing three electrical transformers and the main electrical switch gear for some of the retail stores. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames with two preconnected 1¾-inch fire attack hose lines, preventing the fire from spreading into the businesses of the commercial structure. The fire was brought under control at 4:19 p.m. with no damage to the shopping center structure or the nearby apartment building.

PG&E arrived and isolated power to the transformers causing an electrical service outage to approximately 400 customers in the vicinity. Power remains discontinued to three of the units in the commercial building. Power will remain out until PG&E can determine the extent of damage to their equipment.

The fire was extinguished with no injuries. The Mountain View Police Department provided traffic and crowd control for two hours while fire units and equipment were on the scene.

The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation. The estimated damage to the structure is $100,000.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for portions of the San Francisco Bay Area, in effect from 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, through 10:00 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10. Afternoon high temperatures are expected to exceed average temperatures for most locations, resulting in an increased risk for those sensitive to heat, especially those without effective cooling or adequate hydration.

Take care of yourself and your family by adhering to the following preparedness actions:

• Drink plenty of fluids.
• Stay in air-conditioned areas or visit an air-conditioned building if you do not have A/C.
• Limit outdoor activities during the hottest time of the day.
• Do not leave kids or pets in vehicles.
• Be aware of hot pavement when walking dogs.
• Check on relatives and neighbors.

In anticipation of the heat, the City of Mountain View will open the following facilities to the public as air-conditioned cooling centers to find shelter from the heat:

• The Police Services Fire Administration Building lobby at 1000 Villa St. will be open to the public Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 9 and Sept. 10, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
• The Mountain View Community Center lobby at 201 S. Rengstorff Ave. will be open to the public Wednesday, Sept. 9, 8:30 a.m.-10:00 p.m., and Thursday, Sept. 10, 8:30-9:30 p.m.
• The Mountain View Public Library at 585 Franklin St. will be open to the public Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 9 and Sept. 10, 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
