Mountainside Fire Department In addition, over one half of the Watchung Reservation is located in the Borough of Mountainside.

The Mountainside, NJ Fire Department (Union County) first founded in 1910, and currently serves a population of approximately 7,000 residents living, in approximately 4.1 square miles. The fire department responds to an average of 300 calls per year and provides the town with an array of fire, rescue, and community services. The department is responsible for protecting residential property as well

as two large nursing homes, a hospital, a major movie theatre, and numerous manufacturing facilities. The department also responds to motor vehicle accidents on its 2.7 mile stretch of State Highway 22.

Early Saturday morning at 02:43, FD units were requested to Summit Rd & Route 22 for a reported motor vehicle accident involving a rollover with the vehicle on fire. Upon arrival, crews found a fully involved car fire. Squad 3 stretched a front bumper line and began suppression efforts. The occupant had self-extricated prior to our arrival. Crews quickly extinguished the fire.

At 05:15, the fire department was dispatched to 1327 Wood Valley Rd for an activated fire alarm with smoke on the second floor. While enroute, the dispatcher informed the responding units of heavy smoke on the second floor and that the residences was in the process of being evacuated. Truck 1 arrived at the scene and reported smoke was coming out of the roof line. A second alarm was transmitted. The interior crew reported there was fire in the attic. An attack line was stretched, and water was on the fire within minutes of the first due truck’s arrival. The fire was extinguished shortly after and overhaul efforts began. The fire was brought under control shortly after. Great work from everyone on scene. The fire department would like to remind the public to clear any hydrants near their property to prevent delays during emergency responses. (See the last photo of what it shouldn’t look like.)

This past Sunday, members participated in a SAR (Search and Rescue) training session with conducted by Union County OEM. The training provided members with essential knowledge and skills for conducting searches in the reservation for missing individuals. We want to thank Union County OEM for their willingness to provide this valuable training opportunity to our members.

PLEASE BE ADVISED: The Fire Department will be conducting a simulated structure fire in town at 1283 Poplar Ave. This will be taking place tonight starting at approximately 19:00 hours. There will be heavy fire and ems activity.

At 08:13 this morning, the fire department was dispatched to Hillside ave for a reported structure fire. PD confirmed smoke was showing from the Charlie side of the structure. Squad 3 arrived on scene within minutes of the initial dispatch. Squad 3 stretched an attack line to the charlie side and began fire suppression. The IC requested a second alarm to the scene. The fire was placed under control shortly after. We would like to thank Town of Westfield, NJ Fire Department City of Summit Fire Department and Springfield FMBA local 57 for their help on scene. We also thank Cranford, Plainfield, and Union Fire Department for covering our town.

It is with deep sadness that the Mountainside Fire Department announces the passing of Kenneth Lawrence on August 24th. Kenneth proudly served our department and community for many years, including time as a dedicated line officer. His leadership, mentorship, and service left a lasting impact on generations of firefighters who had the honor of serving alongside him.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Lawrence family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest easy, brother, we’ll take it from here.
