Virginia’s spring fire season is here, officially Feb. 15 – April 30. During that time, the statewide burn law is in effect, which prohibits outdoor fires between midnight and 4 p.m. 🔥🚫

Don't be fooled by the snow! Most of Virginia is in a drought caused by months of below-average rainfall. Already this year, DOF has responded to 80 wildfires that have burned nearly 800 acres.

The best ways you can prevent wildfires:
🔥 Wait until after the fire season to burn yard debris
🔥 If you must burn, avoid windy days
🔥 Never leave a fire unattended
🔥 Know the state burn law and local restrictions

On Saturday February 7th at 15:22 Rugby Fire Rescue was dispatched to assist Troutdale Fire and Rescue with 2 stranded hikers in the vicinity of the Thomas K**b shelter. Mt. Rogers Fire Department And Grayson 161 responded with manpower and a buggy. Responders faced tough conditions with temperatures in the single digits and wind chills well below 0 to go along with the rough, icy terrain. Rugby Buggy 63 was used on a variety of trails to get within a mile of the location of the hikers. Responders then walked the last mile to find the hikers and assisted them out of the backcountry. Thankfully both hikers and all responders made it out safely.

Smoke and burning snags may be present at the fire from yesterday. Forestry officials will be on scene conducting mop-up operations to mitigate these hazards

Rugby responded to a brush fire at 1416 hours today in the 4000 block of Highlands Pkwy, which was ignited by power lines arcing due to high winds. Upon arrival, crews encountered a fire driven by strong winds. A multi-agency response ensued, with five mutual aid fire departments - The Troutdale Community Volunteer Fire Department And Rescue Squad, Piney Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Independence Volunteer Fire Department, New River Vol. Fire & Rescue, and Mt. Rogers Vol. Fire & Rescue - dispatched to assist, along with Virginia Department of Forestry, Grayson County Emergency Services, and Grayson County Sheriff's Office. Following a four-hour operation, the fire was fully contained within fire lines, encompassing 20 acres. The Virginia Department of Forestry will continue to monitor the fire throughout the night as hotspots continue to burn within the containment lines. Special thanks are extended to Rugby Auxiliary members and others who prepared meals for the firefighters. Rugby assisted New River Vol. Fire & Rescue, Jefferson Vol. Fire Dept., Warrensville Fire Rescue, and Piney Creek Volunteer Fire Department in responding to a structure fire involving Grassy Creek Methodist Church this morning, resulting in a total loss of the church, which has been a part of the Grassy Creek Community since 1904. Appreciation is extended to all participating agencies, including Rugby Rescue Squad members for their handling of a second challenging EMS call, as well as auxiliary members from multiple departments.
