How do our schools compare? Test scores have been a topic at early voting. Please look closely at the photos. These scores are available online. NCDPI. Looking at the State and Regional proficiency averages, Currituck’s average is slightly above at 38%. 9 out of 10 schools met expected growth. How did these schools meet expected growth? Teamwork; dedicated teachers and staff, students working hard, and supportive parents. Looking at individual districts in our region, you will see districts showing anywhere from 7% of their students being proficient to 46% proficient. Is there anyone pleased with these scores? Absolutely not! The Nations Report Card is out and reports 0 states had scores that increased in Reading or Math. We must help our students recover from the learning loss associated with the COVID shutdowns. Virginia’s Governor Youngkin has announced plans for learning recovery grants and expanded tutoring partnerships. I’m hoping our Governor will soon share plans to help North Carolina’s students as well. In the meantime, our district’s faculty and staff will continue working hard while implementing our Strategic Plan and meeting the needs of students. And when you look at these scores, don’t forget the pandemic which kept some students out of the classroom from March of 2020 until August 2021. Our teachers care! Our teachers make a difference!

It’s her birthday month. She will be 15 November 15th. She has had some rough days this year but Dr Heather Price was very patient and tried some things which helped her pull through. We celebrate every day with a treat. Love this four legged girl of ours!

Who is Veritas Currituck?

I had several folks reach out yesterday asking that question.
I asked the same question after being contacted by Thom Roddy. Are other candidates a part of it? I really don’t know. I was told it is a group of volunteers, different sources and whistle blowers and that he, Thom Roddy, has final authority. When contacted around October 8th by Mr. Roddy, I was asked questions about our superintendent and the lawsuit involving Larissa York. I felt that it was inappropriate for me to answer most of his questions. He wanted answers immediately, saying the story would go out the next morning. This was October 8th. I looked on the Fb page and never saw it. I asked about it and was told the group decided to hold off. It was posted yesterday on the Moyock FB page. I guess a week before the election is the perfect time, which makes me wonder about the purpose of Veritas Currituck. Is it to keep people informed or is it political? One thing is certain, Mr Roddy/Veritas Currituck supports Paul Beaumont, Will Crodick and Dana Parker. He posted a sample ballot just before early voting started with those 3 names marked and Dana, Will, and Paul have been passing out copies of this at early voting.

There’s a lot of information floating around. Some truths and some myths. As always, feel free to call me with questions. Double check your information and then, YOU DECIDE WHO THE BEST CANDIDATES ARE! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Over the last couple of months we have heard much talk about our school system and I’m sad to say most of the talk has portrayed our system in a negative manner. Have you done YOUR research? Our school system is AMAZING! We are very fortunate to have a school system full of dedicated, hardworking educators who go above and beyond on a daily basis. Visit any of our schools and you will see teachers teaching and well behaved students who are engaged in learning. Currituck parents support our schools in the education of their children. However, there is ALWAYS room for improvement!!! We wanted better! We are working hard to be better!!Have you seen our 5 year Strategic Plan, developed in the midst of Covid? If not, find it on our website or contact me for a copy. Implemented in 2021/2022, it was developed with input from over 400 stakeholders and the collection of 7500 data points. Year one highlights included the hiring of instructional coaches, additional resources, EOC pacing guides, beginning teacher support, and 12 teams of 151 teacher leaders working throughout the summer on curriculum. We are in year two which includes developing consistent curricular parameters, teacher leaders, expected use of identified resources, grading business rules, scheduling business rules, and ACCREDITATION. Yes, getting more of our schools accredited is a part of our plan. WHY WAS THIS PLAN DEVELOPED? We wanted to recognize our system’s strengths and identify areas we needed to concentrate on to address the needs and priorities of our school system. All to benefit our STUDENTS!!
