Town of Mukwonago Police Department

With school back in session The Town of Mukwonago Police Department has already received several complaints about people illegally passing school buses in our jurisdiction. Video from the bus is reviewed, and every complaint is investigated.

WI State Statute 346.48(1) states the following:

"The operator of a vehicle which approaches from the front or rear any school bus which has stopped on a street or highway when the bus is equipped according to s. 347.25 (2) and when it is displaying flashing red warning lights, shall stop the vehicle not less than 20 feet from the bus and shall remain stopped until the bus resumes motion or the operator extinguishes the flashing red warning lights.

The operator of any school bus which approaches from the front or rear any school bus which has stopped and is displaying flashing red warning lights shall display its flashing red lights while stopped. This subsection does not apply to operators of vehicles proceeding in the opposite direction on a divided highway."

PLEASE, keep our kids safe and save yourself a hefty fine by being a patient, attentive, and courteous driver around school buses! Please see the below link for further information from WI DOT.

Drivers must stop on the street or highway 20 feet or more from any school bus that has stopped and is flashing red warning lights.

Sometime with in the last month an unknown individual shot the Town Of Mukwonago sensor and solar panel that go with the sign alerting drivers of the dangerous intersection at Sugden Rd and Beulah Rd. It appears the damage caused to both the sensor and solar panel was done with either bird or buck shot from a shot gun. The amount of damage is estimated to cost several thousand dollars and an insurance claim has been filed. If anyone has any information on who committed this act please notify the Town of Mukwonago Police Dept at 262-363-5188. It is believed this was done as part of an anti-flock camera movement. The Town of Mukwonago does not have any flock cameras within it's jurisdiction and the Police Department does not take part in the flock program.

July Work Anniversaries

Officer Jason Komorowski has been with the Town of Mukwonago Police Department since July of 2023. He currently works on 3rd shift patrol.

The Town of Mukwonago Police Department would like to introduce you to our newest officer, Adam Rife. Officer Rife was sworn in as a Town of Mukwonago Police Officer today, joined by his family and friends. We warmly welcome him into our department family and look forward to serving the community along side him. I know Officer Rife is excited to call this department and this community his new home and is eager to learn the community. Adam will begin the police academy at the WCTC police academy starting at the end of July and will then transition to 16 weeks of field training upon his graduation in December.

Fireworks displays have historically been a cherished part of celebrating our Nation’s independence on the 4th of July. On July 2, the Continental Congress approved the resolution for independence in a near-unanimous vote. The following day, John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail, that July 2 “will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival” and that the celebration should include “Pomp and Parade…Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other.” He was only off by two days…

250 years later, the tradition continues. Americans gather in communities, at festivals, fairs, and picnics to view and enjoy colorful fireworks displays. The louder, the bigger, the brighter, the better. It is an amazing way to honor our independence and freedom.

As you celebrate this year, keep in mind that careless or reckless use of fireworks can be dangerous. Here are some helpful tips to still have ten fingers on July 5th.
• Only use outdoors: Never light fireworks indoors or under overhangs. Choose a flat, clear surface away from buildings, dry leaves, and vehicles.
• Responsibility: Fireworks should only be lit by sober adults.
• One at a time: Light a single device, then quickly move back to a safe distance.
• Never hold devices: Do not light fireworks in your hand or carry them in your pockets.
• No "duds": If a firework fails to ignite, never attempt to re-light it. Wait 20 minutes, then soak it in a bucket of water.
• Extreme heat: Sparklers burn at about 2000° F, which is hot enough to melt some metals.
• Extinguish thoroughly: Soak all used, leftover, and malfunctioning fireworks in a bucket of water for at least 20 minutes (or overnight) before placing them in the trash.

Also, be aware that both Wisconsin Statute (167.10) and Mukwonago Town Ordinance (30-35(C)) restrict the use of certain types of fireworks. A good rule of thumb (bad pun intended) is anything that leaves the ground and/or explodes is not legal to ignite. The Town of Mukwonago Police Department typically responds to several dozen complaints of illegal fireworks every year during the 4th of July weekend.

So, please, celebrate this momentous holiday safely and responsibly. Your neighbor will be less mad at you if you don’t burn down his yard shed with an errant firework.

Today, Officer Don "Boots" Jensen was honored by the Mukwonago Rotary Club for outstanding service to the Town of Mukwonago with the Law Enforcement Professional of the Year Award. Officer Jensen has a long and storied career that started with proud service to his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. Boots spent the majority of his law enforcement career with the Milwaukee Police Department where he retired as a sergeant, having the privilege of serving the residents of that city for twenty-five years. He also served as a sergeant in the Motor Unit and Marine Unit there.
Feeling that he had more to give back to his community, Don continued to serve the public for the next fifteen years at the Village of Eagle Police Department, Village of Twin Lakes Police Department, where he was the Lieutenant in charge of the lake patrol, and Town of East Troy Police Department. Don retired from East Troy as the chief of police in 2022.
The Town of Mukwonago Police Department has been honored to have Officer Jensen serve our department and community since that time where he has assisted with boat patrol, policy updates, and background investigations. Don is a wealth of knowledge, experience, and wisdom and is a priceless resource to our department, officers and supervisors. When Don "holds court", he holds us captive with his wit and storytelling, mentoring informally as he passes down that knowledge to those of us who have the privilege of being present.
Don and his wife also continue to be active parts of many community groups and charities.
If you see Boots in the wild, stop him to say hello and thank him for all he has done for this country and this community. He will likely regale you with a joke or an apropos story.
