Continuing with todays fire calls, about 15 minutes after we received the trash truck fire we received the report of a possible house fire in the north end of town. Thanks to our Automatic Aid agreement Derby Fire Department, Sumner County Fire 9 & Cowley County Fire District IV started trucks to assist us as we were still working on the Trash Truck fire. In this incident the occupant of the home was cooking a pot roast on the stove when it caught the Microwave and Cabinets above the stove on fire. There was no injuries report and one upset cat. Fire crews checked for fire extension and ventilated smoke out of the house.

We had a busy day over the lunch hour today. A trash truck on fire and then a house fire along with a couple EMS calls added in at the same time. The trash truck driver smelled something burning and stopped and called 911. On our arrival there was a small amount of smoke coming from the truck. After sending on of our younger Firefighters in he was able to find a small computer with a Lithium Battery that appeared to be in Thermal Runaway. We were able to pull the battery out of the truck and flooded the truck with water to cool off the trash. Never throw computer devices in the trash or anything with batteries/ This was our second Lithium battery incident in the last month.

On this date back in 2004, a tornado hit near the town of Mulvane. The tornado caused F-3 damage when it struck a home southeast of Mulvane. A 1967 Shelby Mustang was thrown a quarter mile by this tornado.

For many years we’ve been asked “ Where’s your fire dog?” Now we have one! Please enter your name suggestion in the comments. We will pick our favorite name on July 1st. The pup will make his/her first appearance at the July 4th parade riding on Engine 1! (FYI- the new pup is a stuffed dog, and will be a decoration for Engine 1)
