This is a good article. Leaves are free fertilizer. I put some in my compost for the kitchen garden, put some around my berry bushes that are fenced to keep them from blowing away for frost protection and mulch, leave many as they are, and mulched some into the grass with the mower.

Way to go Muncie! The White River has recovered from being a tremendously polluted waterway several decades ago..

On Wednesday, 9/17/2025, the Bureau of Water Quality (BWQ) was awarded the Indiana Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. This award is considered Indiana’s highest honor in environmental stewardship. The BWQ’s freshwater mussel propagation efforts were selected in the “Land Use and Conservation” category which recognizes innovative practices to improve or preserve Indiana’s resources. Known as the “livers of the river” or “ecosystem engineers”, freshwater mussels play a vital role in filtering the White River, removing sediment and excess nutrients, depositing them on the stream bottom. This reduces the amount that moves downstream and provides a food source to our aquatic macroinvertebrates. This fall the BWQ plans to release around 750 mussels from their facility into the White River. Once adults, they will have the capacity to filter 10-15 gallons of water every day! Congratulations to everyone involved in this program and thank you to our partners and collaborators for their generous support!

Members of the MCHS Recycling Club were a big help in preparing for the tree planting component of the 3rd Annual Civics Day on May 2. Several members also helped with watering and mulching the new saplings in the weeks after the planting. Please see explanations with each picture for how various members helped make it possible to plant and maintain these trees. Thank you also to all of the Muncie Central students that helped with planting on Civics Day along with Mr. Brian Turner, Mrs. Julie Turner, Mrs. Melba Fox, and Miss Lexi Shepard that helped lead the students. Thank you to Representative Sue Errington for facilitating the donation of four types of native saplings from Indiana's state nursery in Vallonia; oak, tulip popular, plum, and American cherry. We appreciate Jason Donati from the Muncie Sanitary District for arranging a big truck load of mulch. Thank you to the Muncie Central administrative team for assisting with the organization and promotion of this event. The support of Civics Day organizer Julie Snider, the Civics Day Committee, and Dr. David Roof from Ball State's Center for Economic and Civic Learning was also crucial.

On Friday, May 16 the Muncie Central Recycling Club celebrated 600,000 total pounds recycled since the club was founded by students in 2008. Thank you to these outstanding students included several dedicated graduating seniors for carrying on this tradition of student volunteer service on behalf of the environment.

Compost your old pumpkins and help us keep them out of the landfill. We are collecting old pumpkins and other natural fall decorations (like corn stalks or bales of straw) at Westside, McCulloch, and Halteman Park.

Look for this large black container with the “pumpkin compost” sign next to it. Simply toss your pumpkins or items into the bin. We are partnering with ScrapCycle to compost them and turn them back into nutrients for our soil and keep them out of the landfill.

I look forward to participating in this panel next Tuesday, October 22. Please come if you can. Serving as sponsor of the Muncie Central Recycling Club since it was founded by students in 2008 has shown me that many young people are very concerned about environmental issues.

We have a great group of hard-working student volunteers in the Muncie Central Recycling Club. This student-founded organization is now in its 17th year and has collected a grand total of over 580,000 pounds of recyclables.

Muncie Central High School celebrated Civics Day and Earth Day on April 19. 17 trees were planted by the end of the day and we have a few more to put in the ground this week. I am second from the right with the dark blue hat.
