Yesterday day afternoon our volunteers were alerted to assist Homestead with a working structure fire in the 300 Blk of East 11th Ave. 201 RE with a crew of 4 arrived on scene and assumed 2nd due engine responsibilities. The crew secured a water supply to 171 engine and stretched a back up line and assisted with fire suppression efforts on the 2nd and 3rd division. An additional crew from 201 went to the roof and cut a hole in the roof on side charlie. The ballon construction of this building made it difficult for crews. Balloon construction is when the wall studs run continuously from the foundation all the way to the roof. This causes void spaces that fire can get into and take off. This fire grew to 3 alarms. ACFM is investigating the cause. Early reports indicate a possible lightning strike. 201 responded with 12 members and worked on the scene for just over 4 1/2 hrs before clearing the scene. Interested in joining stop down any Wednesday evening after 6:30 or message us for details. No experience needed and all training is provided.

Last night for drill we were accompanied by Munhall Volunteer Fire Co. # 1 and did some outside the box thinking for drill. We have a couple high rise buildings in the area and yes they have elevators but what happens if we cannot use the elevators and a stair chair is not an option in the event of a medical emergency. We discussed potential anchors and different ideas. For this specific scenario we did a lowering system and fished the rope between the railings allowing the rope to hold the weight of the basket with a patient allowing rescuers to just maneuver the basket around each flight of stairs. Once the basket was at the bottom crews transitioned the lowering system into a haul system and brought the basket back up the same way. Just a little technique for the tool box.

Today was the annual government day for the 3rd grade. The elected officials from the 3rd grade got to tour the borough building and also stopped by our station for a fire demonstration involving the fire triangle. The students were then taken back to the school in the fire, ems, and police vehicles and after arriving back to the school the rest of the 3rd grade got to see all the vehicles.
