Carnegie Library of Homestead

Carnegie Library of Homestead The Library holds 3,000,000 county-wide items in collection including books, audiobooks, DVDs, CDs, newspapers, magazines (current and back issue).

The Carnegie of Homestead’s modern mission is to provide programs and facilities that enhance learning, wellness and quality of life within and outside the Steel Valley. In 2019, there were nearly 7,000 cardholders (35% of our residents) and 230,000 visits (750 per day). Our 30 computers provided nearly 32,239 sessions by the general public, including disadvantaged individuals who cannot afford ho

me computers and online services. Last year, the library held 1,236 learning programs attended by 18,387 people of all ages. On any given day, a variety of activities are happening: toddler and children story time, arts and crafts; science and art classes for homeschooled children and their parents; literacy outreach & book distribution to 30+ local preschools and daycare centers; homework assistance for teens equipped with computers and media; laptops and iPads with college-level computer programming, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Arts, Math) workshops including robotics in the Makerspace classroom; book clubs for teens through seniors, knitting classes, crafting workshops for adults, and cultural programs such as Russian language and psyanky egg decorating! The Athletic Club enrolled 1,130 members who pay affordable fees to attend in Yoga, Water Aerobics, Spinning, Tai Chi, and Zumba classes in the fitness studios, enjoy our heated indoor swimming pool, gymnasium with a walking track, and train for baseball/softball in our indoor batting cages. 200 youth participate in year-round sports lessons and 230 adults enjoy year round basketball and volleyball leagues. 150 children and adults learned to swim, participated in aquatics exercise and scuba instruction classes. 550 seniors are active members of our Silver Sneakers/Silver and Fit exercise classes geared to older adults. The Music Hall seats 1,045 guests in an intimate atmosphere that has changed very little from the original venue. In 2019, 40,000 patrons traveled from Western Pennsylvania and across the country to see nationally known entertainers. Affordably priced tickets are purchased to enjoy popular artists such as American Idol, Little River Band, Boz Scaggs, Jeff Goldblum, and more. The Music Hall uniquely serves also as a “community house” to local nonprofits offering meeting space for civic engagement, programs and services such as graduation commencement exercises, naturalization ceremonies, school band concerts, church plays and local dance recitals. Year-round, the music hall serves as an economic driver for nearby restaurants, retail establishments and hotels – for every 50 shows held, the Carnegie brings over $1,000,000 in revenue to the Waterfront and Eighth Avenue business districts. Space rentals and ticket sales provide revenue to support the facility and programs that serve our community.

Today, we had the Carnegie Museum of Natural History visit us to teach us some more about dinosaurs through some "detective work". It wasn't anything dangerous, we promise! We just had to play a game called "Tooth or Claw?" where we used our deduction skills to figure out if what we were looking at was a dinosaur tooth or a dinosaur claw (no worries, they were all replicas of real ones. We're not quite ready to work with the real ones).

It was quite tricky; they all look the same sometimes!

Then, we worked on our investigative skills by making our own plaster fossils! These can most definitely only help our detective skills by helping us to more accurately identify the fossils that real dinosaurs left behind! For example, could a fossil be a Tyrannosaurus Rex or a Brontosaur?

Thanks again to the lovely and knowledgeable folks from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History for coming out to help us build our detective skills and dinosaur knowledge! Perhaps we're now ready to see the real deal at the museum in Oakland?

One can only guess!

We had SUCH a great time this past Saturday at our kick-off for Summer Reading! We had some games and activities, Dave's Sno Cones, GrammySueSings and Colors by Chrissy who all came to help us get in the mood for some fun!

But of course, we can't forget to thank all our community members! Do you know how hard it is to make sure that our community members can come and successfully feel like they're part of a our dino-riffic kick-off party?

It is actually not as difficult as I'm saying, but I digress.

We want to thank all of our staff here at Carnegie of Homestead for helping us wrangle everything together, some of it last minute, and of course everyone who attended that made the kick-off worth remembering!

Come join us here at Carnegie Library of Homestead for our Summer Reading celebration: "Unearth a Story"! If you couldn't attend the celebration but still want to participate, no worries! Just step into the library to get a reading log, a June calendar of events, and a look at what prizes are on offer for our winners!

Last Wednesday during Miss Robin's Storytime, we had the mayor of Munhall - Rob Falce - visit! He talked to us about all the important helpers in the community - like our friends from the police and fire departments - and how they all help keep our community safe. He then talked about what he does as mayor of Munhall.

Our craft today was making our own campaign posters with our towns like we were running for mayor and then what we would do if we became mayor!

Come join us tomorrow from 11 to 12 for another awesome Storytime with Miss Robin, where we are going to meet a nurse!

Today during Miss Robin's Storytime, we had Firefighter Dave and Firefighter Nick come to visit! Both Firefighters Dave and Nick are from the West Homestead VFD Station 292, and both were super excited to meet us! Firefighter Dave read a book to us about a brave firetruck, who introduced us to his day! This brave firetruck talked about all of his tools (so. many. tools!) that can be used to help during a fire, and how the firefighters use hoses to spray water onto fires to put them out!

Then, Firefighter Nick dressed up in all of his equipment - 1 piece at a time - tho show us what a firefighter looks like! There were so many cool pieces; which one was your favorite? Firefighter Nick then got down on the ground in all of his gear and crawled around, giving out high fives and fist bumps to show that even though he looks different in all of his gear, he is *still* Firefighter Nick!

Finally, after doing our craft - using shapes to create a firetruck! - we all got to become junior firefighters with cool stickers and badges brought to us by Firefighters Dave and Nick!

Come join us next Wednesday from 11 to 12 to see what Miss Robin will do for our next Storytime!

Today during Storytime with Miss Robin, we met Officer Chandler from the Munhall Police Department! We showed him how well we knew our months of the year, and told him that we all had a great Mother's Day with our mommies Sunday!

Then, Officer Chandler read us a story about how police officers can look like normal people outside of their uniforms, but once they put on those special clothes and get their radios on, they can dash off to save the day! We also learned how important it is for police officers to help direct traffic to prevent crashes from happening.

For our craft today, we all made police hats, and Officer Chandler told us that we are all junior police officers! He even stayed to do our craft with us today!

Come join us next week for Storytime on Wednesday, May 20, at 11 AM here at Carnegie of Homestead!
