We will be at the Munsing Farmer's Market today from 4 to 7 pm. We will have the Student Art Contest T-shirts available for sale. All profits raised from these shirts will go right back to the school of the student who designed them for a conservation related project or field trip.

🪽Native Species Spotlight🪽

The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is a beloved local pollinator in the UP. Plenty of people have a hummingbird feeder, but we might as well call it a Ruby-throated feeder since they are the only hummingbird found east of the Mississippi River. This small but mighty bird weighs only 3 to 3.5 grams and can beat its wings more than 50 times per second. To keep up that pace, they can consume up to 3 times their body weight a day, especially when they are migrating. The Ruby-throated hummingbird can migrate as far as Southeastern Canada to Costa Rica, sometimes travelling up to 500 miles nonstop. They make this journey in the early fall, and back again come early spring. It is believed that up to 19 native plants have co-evolved alongside these hummingbirds to either bloom during their migration time or to be shaped in such a way that when hummingbirds drink their nectar, they collect and transport pollen for the plant.

Some of these plants are available at our native wildflower sale! Although pre-orders have now closed, you can still purchase plants at the sale. Plants like Spotted Bee Balm, Wild Columbine, Foxglove Beardtongue, and more are favorites of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. We will be at the Munsing Farmers Market on Monday, August 31st from 4 to 7 pm.

Everyone is buzzing about our annual Native Wildflower Sale. You may be as busy as a bee, but you are just in time to place your pre-order for your own native wildflowers.

The last day to place an order is this Sunday, the 16th. All orders must be placed online at algercd.com/shop. Pickup will be on Monday, the 31st at the Munsing Farmer's Market (355 Elm Ave, Munsing) from 4 to 7 pm.

Keep your eyes on the sky! There will be a partial eclipse visible later today! The total eclipse will be visible over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and Portugal, and most of the northern hemisphere will experience some sort of partial eclipse. In Munising, you can expect up to 3% of the sun to be covered by the moon's shadow. This will begin at 12:43 pm, reach its maximum coverage at 1:23, and conclude at 2:03 pm.

🌾Native Species Spotlight🌾

Big Bluestem is a warm-season grass native to most of Eastern North America. It can grow up to 6 ft tall with a root system twice that size. As it grows, it changes color, starting off a blue-green shade in the spring and ending in a deep red-bronze in the fall.

Big bluestem has a big part to play in the prairie ecosystem. It is a host plant for several species of skipper butterflies. Its mounds are used as shelter for small mammals and ground-nesting birds. Historically, it was a favorite food for American Bison, and today is still favored by most grazing livestock.

What makes a garden a pollinator garden? Wouldn't a pollinator be happy in any garden?

Although it is true that nearly any plant that produces pollen will attract pollinators, there are certain garden designs that can bring extra benefits for our native pollinators. Firstly, make sure there are plants for all different types of pollinators.

When you think of a pollinator, you are likely thinking of a long-tongued pollinator. Bumblebees, hummingbirds, butterflies, and moths all have long tongues. These species can access pollen from long tubular flowers like cardinal flower or foxglove beardtongue. Short-tongued pollinators include several short-tongued bees, flies, or beetles can not acess pollen from the tubular flowers. They perfer open face flowers like black-eyed susans or asters.

Some species of pollinators require certain host plants to raise their young. For example, a monarch butterfly caterpillar has evolved to only be able to eat plants in the milkweed family. Research specific plants and pollinators to find out which plants in your garden are host plants.

RESCHEDULED!
This weekends master gardener workshop has been rescheduled as a dual workshop with the September 6th one. We hope this frees up more of your weekend to spend at the Alger County Fair!

The topic will remain the same....
We will talk about and make compost tea, a potent mixture that can help supercharge your garden. Compost tea can be very helpful in raised beds or container planting, but is great for in-ground gardens as well. We will also check in with the community garden to see how things are growing.
