Last night’s Stockbridge Valley Educational Foundation Trivia Night was a huge success! We had a packed house and raised a great amount of money that will go right back to supporting our students.

A big thank you to Foothill Hops for hosting us and for providing such a great atmosphere for the night. We’re so grateful you welcomed us and allowed us to hold our event there.

Thank you to Ye Olde Pizza Pub for their generous donation, and to Kyle for doing an awesome job running trivia and keeping everyone entertained all night.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who came out to play, laugh, and support the foundation and even those who just stopped in to show their support. Nights like this remind us how special our community is and how much people care about our students.

We truly appreciate all of you! 💙

With gratitude,
The Stockbridge Valley Educational Foundation Board

TODAY IN HISTORY: Nelson Mandela’s first major political statement from prison is published

In South Africa, the African National Congress (ANC) publishes a statement by Nelson Mandela, the long imprisoned leader of the anti-apartheid movement. The message, which Mandela had written in response to the 1976 Soweto uprising, had been smuggled out of Robben Island prison years later under great risk. It ends with the rallying cry: “UNITE! MOBILISE! FIGHT ON! Between the anvil of united mass action and the hammer of the armed struggle we shall crush apartheid and white minority racist rule.”

In addition to underlining the need for unity among Black South Africans to defeat the forces of oppression, Mandela hopefully describes the growing support for their cause outside the nation's borders: "The world is on our side. The OAU, the UN and the anti-apartheid movement continue to put pressure on the racist rulers of our country. Every effort to isolate South Africa adds strength to our struggle...We face the future with confidence."

Mandela, born in 1918, was the son of the chief of the Xhosa-speaking Tembu people. Instead of succeeding his father as chief, Mandela went to university and became a lawyer. In 1944, he joined the ANC, a Black political organization dedicated to winning rights for the Black majority in white-ruled South Africa. In 1948, the racist National Party came to power, and apartheid—South Africa’s institutionalized system of white supremacy and racial segregation—became official government policy. With the loss of Black rights under apartheid, Black enrollment in the ANC rapidly grew. Mandela became one of the ANC’s leaders and in 1952 was made deputy national president of the ANC. He organized nonviolent strikes, boycotts, marches, and other acts of civil disobedience.
