🛡️ Emergency Management Awareness Month: A Look Back

As National Emergency Management Awareness Month comes to a close, we hope you've gained a new appreciation for the role of Emergency Management in Rutherford County.

Throughout August, we've taken you Behind the Badge to show that Emergency Management is much more than responding to severe weather.

You've seen how we plan long before an emergency occurs, train alongside our public safety partners, coordinate resources, support the Emergency Operations Center, and respond to a wide variety of incidents - from hazardous materials emergencies and search and rescue operations to aircraft incidents, major fires, special events, evacuations, damage assessments, and more.

One of the biggest lessons we hope you've taken away is that Emergency Management is a team effort.

While our staff plays an important role, we are just one part of a much larger response. Every incident brings together firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, dispatchers, public works crews, utility providers, healthcare partners, volunteers, state and federal agencies, and many others who work toward a common goal.

Each agency has a unique role. Each person brings specialized skills. Together, we serve the people of Rutherford County.

Thank you for following our Behind the Badge series and allowing us to share what Emergency Management looks like from our perspective. It has been our privilege to give you a glimpse into the work that takes place every day to help keep our community safe.

🛡️Behind the Badge: Long After the Storm

When the sirens go quiet and the news cameras leave, the work isn't over.

Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency stays involved long after the immediate response, helping connect disaster survivors with resources, coordinating rebuilding efforts, and supporting our community through recovery.

Whether it's a tornado, severe storm, or another disaster, recovery is often the longest part of the process. It takes patience, coordination, and partnership with volunteers, non-profits, and neighboring agencies to help families and communities get back on their feet.

Because our commitment to Rutherford County doesn't end when the response does.

Many people think Emergency Management only responds to severe weather.

While severe weather is certainly a part of what we do, Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency also responds to and supports incidents such as:

Emergency Management is an all-hazards profession, meaning we prepare for and support many different types of emergencies, not just those caused by the weather.

Emergency Management personnel don't always stay in the Emergency Operations Center.

Our staff frequently responds to emergency scenes throughout Rutherford County, working alongside our public safety partners.

Depending on the incident, we may assist with:

✔️ Coordinating resources
✔️ Supporting Unified Command
✔️ Managing communications and information sharing
✔️ Conducting damage assessments
✔️ Coordinating evacuations and sheltering
✔️ Connecting affected residents with available resources

Every incident is different, and our role changes based on what is needed.

That's one of the things that makes Emergency Management unique.

🛡️ Behind the Badge: Emergency Management Always On Call

When most people finish their workday, they head home, have dinner with their families, and enjoy the evening.

For Emergency Management, the work doesn't stop.
Emergencies don't wait for business hours. They can happen in the middle of the night, on weekends, during holidays, or while we're spending time with our families.

That's why Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Whether it's a hazardous materials incident, a search and rescue operation, a major fire, an aircraft emergency, severe weather, or another unexpected event, we're prepared to respond whenever we're needed.

Being "on call" means being ready to leave the dinner table, answer a late-night phone call, or respond before the sun comes up - because protecting our community isn't limited to a schedule.

It's a responsibility we take seriously and a commitment we're proud to make.

Emergency Management is also involved in large public events - not just disasters.

When Rutherford County hosts major events, EMA often works alongside public safety partners to help with planning, coordination, and emergency readiness.

This may include:
• Planning for emergency access routes
• Coordinating with public safety agencies
• Supporting communication plans
• Identifying potential hazards
• Assisting with contingency planning

The goal is to ensure that large gatherings are both enjoyable and safe for the public.

Whether it’s an emergency or a planned event, coordination is key.

When someone goes missing, every minute matters.

Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency works alongside our public safety partners during search and rescue operations in whatever role is needed.

Depending on the incident, EMA personnel may:
🔍 Search alongside other responders
🗺️ Assist with planning search operations
📍 Track searched areas and incoming information
🤝 Support the Incident Commander
📡 Coordinate resources and communications
🚜 Request specialized equipment or additional personnel when needed

Search and rescue operations often involve multiple agencies working toward one common goal - bringing someone home safely.

🛡️ Behind the Badge: Hazardous Materials Incidents

When a hazardous materials incident occurs, most people see firefighters working to contain the spill or leak.

What many don't see is the work happening behind the scenes.

Depending on the incident, Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency may respond to:

☣️ Assess the situation alongside responding agencies
🚛 Coordinate environmental cleanup contractors
📋 Ensure hazardous materials are properly remediated and disposed of
📞 Report qualifying incidents to the State of Tennessee
🤝 Coordinate with local, state, and private-sector partners
📡 Support communication and resource coordination

No two hazmat incidents are exactly alike. Whether it's a fuel spill from a crash, a chemical release, or another hazardous materials emergency, our role is to help ensure the incident is coordinated from response through cleanup.
