MTSU College of Basic & Applied Sciences The College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS) spans everything from the fundamental sciences to cutting-edge applied sciences fields.

The College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS) is a diverse set of departments that includes the basic sciences (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics), Mathematics, and Computer Science as well as Aerospace, Agriculture, Concrete Industry Management, Engineering Technology, and Military Science. We believe that science holds the hope of our country's continued success and are working hard to improve

K-12 education in the basic and applied sciences. We are excited you have taken time to visit our site. The largest of the university's five undergraduate colleges in terms of the overall number of declared majors, the college has 4000+ undergraduate, over 300 master's, 90 doctoral students. This college offers 16 undergraduate major programs, including 56 different emphasis areas. Seven of the ten departments within the college offer programs leading to a master's degree. The college also offers three interdisciplinary Ph.D. degrees in the areas of Computational Science, Molecular Biosciences, and Mathematics and Science Education.

Keely O’Brien, professor of Agriculture and Fermentation Science at MTSU, explains how fermentation works, the important role microbes play in everyday life, and how these ancient biological processes are driving new innovations in food science in a recent episode of The Research Minute podcast.

Last week, CBAS participated in and sponsored the Tennessee Valley Corridor National Summit, joining leaders from government, industry, national laboratories, and higher education to discuss the future of quantum science, artificial intelligence, nuclear energy, and national security.

The conversations reinforced the critical role universities play in advancing research, developing talent, and supporting innovation. As part of Tennessee's growing technology ecosystem, MTSU is contributing through research and workforce development in quantum science, cybersecurity, AI, engineering, and other STEM fields.

We appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with partners across the region as we work to prepare the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Liz Barnes

Before becoming a nationally recognized researcher in science education, Dr. Liz Barnes was a teenager working as a waitress after leaving high school. Today, she is helping faculty across the country better understand how students learn science and how teaching can be more effective.

As an associate professor in MTSU Department of Biology, Barnes studies evidence-based teaching practices and works to make science more accessible for students from all backgrounds. Her own path to higher education continues to shape her research, teaching, and commitment to student success.

Game worn military jerseys from the Sounds’ Salute to Armed Forces Day game are now being auctioned to benefit the MTSU Charlie and Hazel Daniels Veterans and Military Family Center. 🇺🇸

The Daniels Center serves more than 1,300 veterans and military connected students and families each year, providing support that helps them succeed academically, professionally, and personally.
