🚨Vote!🚨If you follow me on here, I assume you have an interest in Murfreesboro City Schools or public education. The current race for MCS school board members is uncontested -- the three incumbents are running unopposed. But other races happening now still have a huge effect on MCS and public education. Please vote!
For example, all county commission seats are up for election this year, and several races are contested. While MCS's local budget is most closely tied to the Murfreesboro City Council, recent votes by the Rutherford County Commission have had a significant and negative effect on MCS (and RCS).
This is a complex budget issue, but the short version is that from 2017-2021, around 47% of county property tax dollars went to education. The commission has been shifting the allocation of these property tax dollars a little bit every year since then so that now only 30% of property tax dollars go to education. The education fund from which the commission has been pulling dollars is split proportionally between RCS and MCS, based on the number of Rutherford County students each district serves.
Because of these moves, MCS has had $22 MILLION less(!) in our budget than we otherwise would have. (And RCS has had $130 million less.) We have had to start making some very difficult choices at budget time as a result.
I know the commission has faced difficult budget decisions, too. But if public education is important to you, remember that ALL your local votes matter!
