There’s a new historic poster in the lobby of the Rutherford County Historic Courthouse courtesy of the Colonel Hardy Murfree Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter which commemorates the 250th birthday of America. The posters were funded by a grant from The Tennessee 250 Semiquincentennial Commission.

Pictured are Honorary Regent Charlotte Alexander (Elaine) and Marzee Woodward with Mayor Joe Carr.

A word about the Rutherford County Historic Courthouse and Museum

Unfortunately, after a thorough review of several issues, including museum traffic, office security, and building infrastructure, it was determined that closing the building on weekends was necessary.

The building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1859 and is one of only six pre-Civil War Tennessee courthouses still standing.

Facility use must be monitored in an effort to preserve the remaining infrastructure of the building. One of the primary issues is that the existing plumbing cannot sustain the high volume usage customary at public events. It has long been county policy that event sponsors are required to provide appropriate portable restroom facilities for their participants.

Thank you for your understanding, and we are sorry for the inconvenience this may cause.

Please join us in helping to conserve this historic building for future generations.

Rutherford County Archives welcomes County Genealogist Kayla Howard
Rutherford County – TN (02/13/2025) Rutherford County Commission has confirmed Kayla Howard as the new County Genealogist.

This position is a non-payroll appointed position, similar to the County Historian’s position currently filled by Greg Tucker.

Howard replaces Susan Daniel, who stepped down after serving for 46 years.

Rutherford County Archives Director John Lodl said the County Genealogist position was created in 1978 at the same time that the Rutherford County Public Records Commission was started by state mandate. Daniel championed the need for a county archives department.

“We are very excited to have Kayla Howard appointed as the new County Genealogist,” Lodl said. “As current supervisor of the Historical Research Center, a branch of the Rutherford County Library System, Kayla is in a key position in terms of researching our rich and diverse local history. Kayla will continue making great strides in connecting researchers to their ancestors though the records of our historical past.”

The mission of the Rutherford County Archives is to preserve and protect the written documents, past and present, generated by the government offices of Rutherford County, Tennessee.
