In 1979 president Jimmy Carter, advised by the hawkish Zbigniew Brzezinski, began covertly assisting Islamist mujahideen fighters against a leftwing Afghan government that was trying to modernize the country with assistance from the Soviet Union. UT President Randy Boyd is the founder and former chairman of Radio Systems Corporation, a private company with $437 million in revenue in 2019.
