The Murphy Police Department would like to remind everyone that tomorrow, Tuesday, May 19th, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, we will be hosting our Law Enforcement Career Expo.

This event will be held at the Murphy Police Department, located at 498 Hill Street in Murphy.

This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement to come meet officers, ask questions, and learn more about the hiring process, training opportunities, career paths, and what it’s really like to serve your community in public safety.

Whether you are already certified, considering a career change, or simply interested in attending an upcoming Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) academy, we encourage you to stop by and speak with representatives from multiple agencies.

The search for Scott Allen Mello continues. Search crews, K9 teams, Fire Department Personnel and Law Enforcement are in the area of East Murphy near Hill St, Lowes, Murphy Post Office, etc. IF YOU LIVE IN THAT AREA AND YOU HAVE A CAMERA ON YOUR HOUSE. PLEASE CHECK IT FROM 5am to 10am May 11th. If you have footage of Scott call 911 or 828-835-3144 and let Law Enforcement know about it.

On Thursday, April 30, Murphy Police Officer Brayden Snow was honored as Police Officer of the Year for the entire State of North Carolina by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). This prestigious recognition highlights Officer Snow’s unwavering commitment to impaired driving enforcement and the countless potential tragedies his proactive efforts have helped prevent on our roadways.

This award not only reflects Officer Snow’s diligence in identifying and removing impaired drivers, but also underscores his dedication to protecting the lives of residents and visitors throughout our community. His work goes beyond enforcement—he actively contributes to education, awareness, and the overall mission of reducing impaired driving incidents across the state.

Several of Officer Snow’s colleagues, along with the Mayor of Murphy, traveled to Selma North Carolina to stand alongside him in support and to witness this well-deserved recognition. Their presence reflects the strong support from both the department and the community, and the pride felt in Officer Snow’s accomplishments.

Earlier this month, the Murphy Police Department, in partnership with the Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office, concluded the trial of Christopher Rhodes in connection with a shooting incident that occurred at Burger King in October 2022.

At the conclusion of the trial, a jury found Rhodes guilty on multiple serious charges. He was subsequently sentenced to a minimum of 35 years and a maximum of 45 years in prison.

The convictions include:
• Attempted First-Degree Murder
• Attempted Kidnapping
• Assault by Strangulation
• Possession of a Firearm by a Felon
• Habitual Felon

This case reflects the continued commitment of local law enforcement and prosecutors to pursue justice and hold violent offenders accountable. The Murphy Police Department extends its appreciation to the Cherokee County District Attorney’s Office, the jury, and all those involved in bringing this case to a successful resolution.

The Department remains dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of the Murphy community.

The Murphy Police Department is proud to announce that Officer Brayden Snow was awarded the Western DWI Task Force pin this past Friday in recognition of his outstanding efforts in impaired driving enforcement and his continued commitment to protecting the citizens of Murphy and Cherokee County. In addition to his enforcement efforts, Officer Snow has demonstrated a strong commitment to ongoing training and professional development.

The DWI Task Force pin, presented in partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), is awarded to officers who demonstrate exceptional dedication to removing impaired drivers from the road and enhancing public safety.
