🔥 A Critical Message from Your Murphysboro Fire Department: Every Second Counts! 🔥

The nature of home fires has changed dramatically in recent decades, making early detection and rapid escape more critical than ever.

Did you know?

* Just 40 years ago, residents typically had around 17 minutes to escape a house fire after it started.
* Today, that crucial window has shrunk to a mere 3 to 4 minutes.

This drastic reduction in escape time is a direct result of changes in modern construction and home furnishings. Contemporary materials and synthetic products ignite faster, burn hotter, and produce more toxic smoke, accelerating fire spread exponentially.

What does this mean for YOU and YOUR FAMILY?

It means that preparedness isn't just important—it's essential for survival. There's simply less time to react. The speed at which fires now develop underscores the absolute necessity of working smoke alarms and a well-practiced home escape plan. It also highlights why a rapid, professional fire response is paramount; minutes saved by firefighters mean lives saved.

Your Action Plan for Fire Safety:
* Test Smoke Alarms Monthly: Ensure alarms are installed on every level of your home and inside every sleeping area. Replace batteries annually, or alarms every 10 years.
* Develop & Practice an Escape Plan: Work with your family to create a clear plan. Identify at least two ways out of every room.
* Establish a Meeting Place: Choose a safe, identifiable spot outside your home, a reasonable distance away.
* Get Out & Stay Out: Once you've escaped, never re-enter a burning building for any reason.

The Murphysboro Fire Department is here 24/7, ready to respond to emergencies. But our strongest tool is a prepared community. Please take these steps seriously – your life, and the lives of your loved ones, depend on it.

Dear Cape Girardeau Community,

It has been 1012 days since our dedicated firefighters have been working without a contract. We've tirelessly served our community, but without a fair and respectful contract, our ability to continue ensuring public safety is compromised.

We ask our elected officials: How many more days will pass before you follow the law and return to the bargaining table? How many more experienced firefighters will resign and leave for communities that prioritize public safety?
Tomorrow marks the deadline for officials to respond to our demand to return to negotiations and comply with Missouri State law. Your support means everything to us, and we thank you for standing with us.

Together, we'll continue to do our best to keep you safe.
