Interested in serving on your local school board?

The next Illinois school board election will be held April 6, 2027, and the process for becoming a candidate is already underway.

School board members are locally elected citizens who help provide leadership and governance for their school districts. If you've ever considered serving your community in this important role, now is the time to learn more.

πŸ“… Important dates:
➑️ August 25, 2026 β€” First day to circulate nominating petitions
➑️ November 16–23, 2026 β€” Candidate filing period
➑️ April 6, 2027 β€” Election Day

Generally, candidates must be at least 18 years old, registered voters, U.S. citizens, and residents of their school district for at least one year prior to the election. Additional requirements may apply depending upon the school district.
Candidate packets and filing information are available through local County Clerks. For school districts that cross county lines, candidates generally file with the County Clerk in the county where the school district's main office is located.

Our office has put together information to help prospective candidates in Alexander, Jackson, Perry, Pulaski and Union counties understand the basic requirements.
