Re: Inmate Convicted for Assault on Calloway County Jail Deputy Jailer

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Calloway County Jail is announcing the conviction and sentencing of inmate Chase Byerly in connection with the assault of a deputy jailer that occurred within the facility in May of 2025.

Following an investigation and subsequent prosecution, Byerly was convicted in Calloway County Circuit Court of Assault 3rd Degree – Inmate Assault on a Correctional Employee, a Class D Felony. He was also charged as a Persistent Felony Offender II (PFO II). As a result of the conviction, Byerly was sentenced to three years of incarceration. The charges for which he was originally incarcerated were later dismissed.

This conviction demonstrates that assaults against our staff will be taken seriously and prosecuted accordingly. Our deputy jailers face challenging and often dangerous situations every day while maintaining the safety and security of our facility. We appreciate the efforts of the prosecutors and the court system in holding individuals accountable for their actions. Incidents such as this serve as a reminder of the risks correctional officers encounter on a daily basis. Routine interactions can rapidly escalate into dangerous situations, requiring staff to make split-second decisions to protect themselves, fellow employees, inmates, and the public.

Last week Murray Police Department reached out asking if our agency had any volunteers to participate in a demonstration of the effects of the TASER for a group of middle school kids who were participating in a summer program led by MPD. Last year our fearless (or crazy πŸ€ͺ) Deputy Jailer Amanda Weatherford took the long five-second ride βš‘οΈβ€” this year we had a newer staff member, Deputy Jailer Jennifer Smith, who was going to miss out on our upcoming TASER certification class next week, so she got the honor of getting certified earlier…with a group of middle school kids, MPD officers and some of our staff watching. Proud to say she did a fantastic job and the kids did not learn any new words they didn’t need to know πŸ˜‚ we love participating in programs like this when we are asked. Great job Deputy Smith πŸ‘πŸ»

Please join us in congratulating Deputy Amanda Weatherford on becoming the newest Certified Taser Instructor for the Calloway County Jail.

Over the last two days, Deputy Weatherford and another instructor traveled to Cape Girardeau, Missouri to attend an intensive Taser Instructor Course hosted by Axon. During the course, they received advanced instruction on Taser deployment, safety procedures, de-escalation techniques, policy considerations, and scenario-based training using virtual reality (VR) technology designed to prepare instructors to train and certify correctional staff within our facility.

This type of training is extremely important in a correctional environment. Having properly trained instructors helps ensure our staff are equipped with safe, effective, and professional tools to manage difficult situations while prioritizing the safety of staff, inmates, and the public.

We are proud of Deputy Weatherford and our other Taser Instructor Deputy John Emily for their dedication to professional development and for continuing to help strengthen our training programs at the Calloway County Jail.

Today we recognize and congratulate Sergeant Cayla Jessee on 5 years of service at the Calloway County Jail. As the current 1st Shift Sergeant, she helps mentor and train new employees as they begin their careers in corrections. Sgt. Jessee serves as an instructor for our medical training and body scanner training, ensuring our staff are properly prepared and equipped with the knowledge needed to safely and professionally perform their duties.

Thank you, Sergeant Jessee, for your hard work and professionalism. Congratulations on this milestone achievement, and we look forward to many more years of success ahead πŸ‘πŸ»

The Calloway County Jail business office will be closed to the public on Monday May 25th, 2026 in observance of Memorial Day. We will reopen on Tuesday May 26th at 8:00am.

As we spend time with family and friends this holiday weekend, let us all remember the true meaning of Memorial Day and honor those who gave everything for our country. From all of us at the Calloway County Jail β€” thank you to our military heroes. We remember. We honor. We are grateful.

πŸŽ“ Congratulations to Jason Pritchett and Malik Johnson on earning their GED while incarcerated at the Calloway County Jail! πŸŽ“

This is a major accomplishment and an important step toward building a better future after release. Earning a GED requires dedication, discipline, and a willingness to put in the hard work to improve yourself despite difficult circumstances. We are proud of both of these individuals for taking advantage of the educational opportunities available to them and investing in their future.

Programs like this are an important part of our mission to reduce recidivism and help prepare inmates for successful reentry back into the community. Through educational services and partnerships, inmates are given the opportunity to continue their education, develop life skills, and improve their chances of finding stable employment once they return home. A GED can open doors to better job opportunities, vocational training, and continued education. More importantly, it represents a commitment to positive change and personal growth.

At the Calloway County Jail, we believe rehabilitation and accountability go hand in hand. Success stories like this remind us why these programs matter β€” not only for the individuals involved, but for their families and the community as a whole.

Congratulations again to Jason and Malik on this achievement. We wish them continued success moving forward. πŸ‘πŸ»

We would like to recognize our two newest Kentucky Department of Corrections (DOC) Certified Fi****ms Instructors: Lieutenant Taylor Black and Deputy John Emily.

Last week, Lt. Black and Deputy Emily attended the KYDOC Fi****ms Instructor course at the Western Kentucky Regional Training Center in Fredonia, KY, where they successfully completed the certification course to become fi****ms instructors for the Calloway County Jail. The fi****ms instructor course curriculum is designed to ensure instructors are highly trained in firearm safety, marksmanship, use-of-force standards, range operations, weapon handling, policy compliance, and the ability to effectively teach and evaluate other officers. The course requires extensive classroom instruction, practical exercises, qualification standards, and scenario-based training to prepare instructors for the responsibility of training fellow officers.

Having well-trained fi****ms instructors within our facility is critical to maintaining a safe environment for our staff, inmates, and community. These instructors help ensure our deputies are properly trained, confident in their abilities, and capable of responding appropriately in high-stress situations while emphasizing safety, professionalism, and accountability at all times.

Please join us in congratulating Lt. Taylor Black and Deputy John Emily on this accomplishment and their continued dedication to professional development and service to the Calloway County Jail.

Today we took advantage of the nice weather to get together and fellowship with our staff outside of work at our Employee Appreciation Picnic at Murray-Calloway Co. Parks. We appreciate the hard work and dedication of all of our staff and this is just one small way for us to show them how appreciated they are.

πŸ”₯ Thank you to Chief Deputy Thomas Marshall for being our grill master grilling up some delicious hot dogs and burgers β€” shoutout to Off the Hoof and Food Giant of Murray for donating the burgers & hot dogs 🌭 πŸ”

🀩 Thank you to Lieutenant Taylor Black, Captain Brian Cannon and Deputy Billy R Wilcher for working hard the last few months getting everything together that we have shared over the last week. It’s because of these staff members, who volunteer to take on this task each year, that we are able to do this. It takes a lot of work, planning and organizing and they do a great job!

πŸ‘πŸ» Thank you to each of these other local businesses for their contributions to our picnic:

βœ… Stella Country Market β€” burger toppings, condiments, and cookies
βœ… Kroger in Murray β€” waters, drinks and chips
βœ… Food Giant β€” hot dogs, buns, cheese slices and drinks
βœ… Off the Hoof β€” hamburger patties
βœ… The Murray Bank β€” ice cream truck

A little additional fact you may not know β€” the large grill, seen in the pictures, was donated to our jail from Captain Mike Hopkins family after he passed away last year. He was so proud when he bought this grill, and I hope he would be happy to know we are still using it to feed the staff he put many years of knowledge into.
