The Shoe Tree

The Shoe Tree "Dozens of unmatched shoes dangling from their laces in the middle of Murray State’s campus always gets the attention of visitors and new students alike.

What do they symbolize, one might wonder, and where did they come from? While not all of these questions can be answered, tradition tells us that Murray State University’s shoe tree is a unique ritual that began sometime in the 1960s and continues today. The story goes something like this, two people who meet and fall in love, eventually marry and then nail their shoes on the tree as a symbol of t

heir love for one another and in memory of where they first met. However, when this tradition actually began and the original reason for the display is still up for debate."
