Did you know that rising property values do not automatically mean more revenue for local government? Property values play a key role in how property taxes are calculated, but they it’s not as simple as it seems.

Here are a few important points:
-Property taxes are based on assessed market value.
-Primary residences are taxed at 55% of value.
-Changes in value can shift how taxes are distributed between property owners without changing the amount local government receives.

As values change, tax responsibility may shift, but local budgets are independent of those values.
