Bank Robbery-Suspect in Custody

On Monday, August 24, 2026, at approximately 9:05 a.m., MUSCOM received a report of an armed robbery at U.S. Bank, located at 1800 Park Avenue in Muscatine. Officers were dispatched immediately.

Officers responded to the area and began searching for a male subject who had fled the scene.

A Muscatine County Deputy located the suspect vehicle traveling northbound on Highway 38. Additional law enforcement units responded to assist. An Iowa State Trooper initiated a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle on Highway 38, just north of Highway 6.

The suspect, 38-year-old Mathew Rawson of Coralville, Iowa, was taken into custody without incident. Rawson is being held at the Muscatine County Jail on one count of Armed Robbery, with additional charges pending.

The Muscatine Police Department was assisted by the Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, and Wilton Police Department.

Muscatine Police will continue processing the crime scene and interviewing witnesses. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Lt. David O’Connor of the Muscatine Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit at 563-263-9922, ext. 608. Callers may remain anonymous.

Rawson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

A Simple Reminder

In the middle of a critical incident, when emotions were high and first responders were focused on the task at hand, something remarkable happened.

A young boy, Nehemiah Aguirre, quietly approached Muscatine Police Chief Tony Kies and asked, "Can I pray with you?"

Without hesitation, Chief Kies knelt down beside him. Right there, in the middle of uncertainty, Nehemiah bowed his head and offered a heartfelt prayer.

In that moment, the noise seemed to fade. It was a powerful reminder that strength isn't always found in words or actions—it can also be found in faith, compassion, and the courage of a child.

Nehemiah's simple act of kindness touched everyone who witnessed it. At a time when so many were searching for hope, he reminded us that sometimes the greatest comfort comes from the smallest among us.

Thank you, Nehemiah Aguirre, for your compassion, your courage, and for reminding us all of the power of prayer. Your kindness made a difference, and it's something we won't soon forget.

Muscatine Police Department Officer Involved Shooting

Update 8/17/2026 7:45pm – SUSPECT IN CUSTODY

At 7:32 p.m. today, Muscatine Police took 59-year-old Mark Lee Jackson into custody without incident.

Jackson was located at 1116 Oak Street in Muscatine.

A special thanks to the Iowa DCI and ATF for many long hours put into this case.

Muscatine Police Department Officer Involved Shooting

Update 8/15/2026 12:30 p.m.- SUSPECT STILL AT-LARGE

After an extensive search, the Muscatine Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating wanted subject 59-year-old Mark Lee Jackson.

Jackson has active warrants for Parole Violation and Theft in the 2nd Degree. He should be considered armed and dangerous. The public is advised not to approach or attempt to contact Jackson.

Jackson is described as approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing 145 pounds, with blue eyes and thinning gray hair.

Anyone with information regarding Jackson’s whereabouts or this incident is encouraged to contact the Muscatine Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit at (563) 263-9922. Callers may remain anonymous.

Muscatine Police Department Officer Involved Shooting

On Friday, August 14, 2026, at approximately 5:12 p.m., a Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office Deputy attempted to stop a vehicle that was being driven recklessly in the area of Benham Avenue and Nebraska Street. The vehicle failed to stop and continued driving erratically at high rates of speed through residential neighborhoods, eluding the deputy.

The suspect vehicle subsequently crashed, and the driver fled the area on foot.
The driver was identified as 59-year-old Mark Lee Jackson of Des Moines. At approximately 5:27p.m. Jackson was located by law enforcement running in the 1200 block of Grandview Avenue. During the subsequent foot pursuit, Jackson fired at pursuing officers, striking a Muscatine Police Department Officer.

The officer was transported by the Muscatine Fire Department and is currently in stable condition.

This remains an active situation, and Jackson is still at large. Jackson has active warrants through Iowa State Corrections for a parole violation and through the Muscatine Police Department for Theft 2nd. He should be considered armed and dangerous.
