ā¤ļøOur last Valentine spotlight is reserved for Kitty Jo. ā¤ļø She has been with the program about 6 years!

You can find her owner Betsy Evans at the Tuesday evening classes helping with chores, preparing horses for class and assisting where she is needed.

This is what Betsy has to say about Kitty Jo:

ā¤ļø Kitty Jo has many that love her. I’ve taught many children and adults the basics of how to treat, care and ride with her, she is very tolerant.šŸ˜‚. She loves her job at Ag Center.

She is a Mustang/quarter horse. Kitty Jo lives with April, her 23 year old mini horse and three barn cats. I’ve owned her since she was three years old, she’s 14 now. A fun fact is that Kitty Jo was started as a cow horse!

ā¤ļøAnother one of our Valentines is Bleu. He is owned by Katie Yakle.

This is what Katie has to say about Bleu:

Bleu is the older brother to Sam. Sam was a program horse several years ago. Bleu loves treats and hanging out with his friend Maple. He loves to go on adventures and rides. His quirky personality matches all his freckles.

ā¤ļøOur next set of Valentines are Cherry and Ziggy. These two sweethearts are owned by Deb and Dean Friederichs. You will see Deb and Dean helping out with classes, getting horses ready, and helping out where ever they canā¤ļø

Here is what Deb and Dean had to say about Ziggy and Cherry:

Ziggy grew up in the mountains before joining the RFS team. Ziggy is always willing to try new adventures and loves carrots!

Cherry is very competative. She has been know to kick it into high gear when there is a race at RFS. She also loves bobbing for apples at the Halloween parties!i

We love our horses and pony at Riding for Success. And what a perfect month to showcase our appreciation to our 4-legged Valentines ā¤ļø

Our first highlight is Maple. She is owned by Tinley Yakle. This is what she wrote about her favorite šŸ’˜ Valentine:

Hi my name is Maple aka Mapes. I am a 15 year old Shetland pony. I am a very sweet pony that loves treats. Some of my favorites are apples, horse treats, grain and corn. Me and my 6 year old owner love to trail ride, camp, and do fun shows. Our first time doing poles we won the peewee class! Maples best horse friend at RFS is Bleu, her next door stall neighbor. My owner thinks I'm the best pony ever, and hopes other kids can have fun on me this winter.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday time and Happy New Year!

Kim and myself have been working on a few projects behind the scenes in reaching out the Veterans and their families as volunteers and riders. In December, I spoke at a Wilton American Legion meeting about our program. A few weeks later they sent sponsorship money for 1 or more Veteran riders! This month we will present our program to Muscatine American Legion and go to the Muscatine Veterans Network.

If you know of Veteran riders and/or volunteers that would benefit from the horseback riding program, please let us know.

šŸ¦„ Thank you volunteers for all that you do šŸ¦„

Come join us to learn more about volunteering with Riding For Success! We are holding a Volunteer Training tomorrow, Tuesday Dec 9th from 5:15pm - 6:30pm for both seasoned and new Volunteers. Ag Learning Center - 3200 Lucas St in Muscatine

We will demo best practices with one of our program horses. Training is geared towards volunteers that have not attended prior training, volunteers wanting a refresher, and any potential volunteers that may be interested and want to see if RFS will be a fit!

Please invite friends that may be interested or just curious about our program. All are welcome; we hope to see to see some new faces tomorrow!

Note: no worries if you’re running late or need to leave early. We will start content closer to 5:30pm and may run a bit past 6:30pm if we need more time or for any group announcements/discussions… We will try and hold mini training sessions adjacent to lessons and do on-the-job training…for those not able to attend.

It is always hard to share the news of losing one of our horses. Mr. Personality was the best way to describe him ā€œMurphyā€ was always the first one to greet you with a hug. From the Riding for Success riders, high school Ag students and MCC Vet Tech students Murphy put a lot of smiles on a lot of faces, the kids just gravitated to him and he soaked up all of the attention they were offering. He enjoyed being out with his boys, chasing them with cones and rolling in the mud. Thank you for sharing this special boy with us Barb.
