Please note that Musser Public Library will be adjusting its operating hours beginning July 1.

New Hours:
📚Monday–Thursday: 10:00 AM–8:00 PM
📚Friday: 10:00 AM–6:00 PM
📚Saturday: 10:00 AM–2:00 PM
📚Sunday: Closed

What a fun third week of Summer Reading! 🦕📚

This week, families and teens created search-and-find jars, made rubber stamps, enjoyed an adventure story hike, and joined us for a special reading of Chick-o-saurus with author Kelly Crull. We also welcomed live animals from our local conservation team, and adults enjoyed this month's Creative Escape program featuring charcuterie board making with Chelsea Harms of Cheers & Graze with Charm.

Thank you to everyone who joined us throughout the week. We can’t wait to see you again next week for more Summer Reading fun as we continue to Unearth a Story!

The Octagon House is located at 2610 Park Avenue or in other words right next to McDonalds. According to the book Historic Architecture of Muscatine, County, “Samuel de Sinnette was a descendant of a French aristocratic family of Huguenots who fled to Ireland when the Edict of Nantes was revoked by Louis XIV. He changed his name to Samuel Sinnette when he immigrated to America. He settled in Muscatine County in 1840 and 15 years later built this octagon plan house.” The home remained in the Sinnett family until it was sold to Mr and Mrs Frank Grigg in 1937.

For today’s Throwback Thursday I am going to focus on George and Joanne Debo who leased the building and remodeled it to create an eating establishment in 1977. Since the building is registered with the Iowa Division of Historic Preservation the remodeling had to meet certain requirements so that the historic value was preserved. During this time, a new addition was added to the existing structure. This new addition would house the kitchen and banquet hall. There would be two floors of dining space with most of the original rooms intact. Each room would have a “Victorian theme” with furniture fixtures depicting the period. After renovations, there was seating capacity for 175-200 people.

The Octagon House opened for business on June 28, 1977. These photographs show the original house, the house under construction, and the Debos. The clippings from the Muscatine Journal June 27, 1977 show how some of the rooms were arranged and the menu.

In May of 1983, Allan and Deborah Abrahams would lease the space and change the name to the “Octagon Place.”
