It's Library Card Sign-Up Month! Getting a library card is easy and FREE! Just bring your photo ID and proof of address to the Service Desk and we'll take care of the rest.

NOTE: Proof of address needs to have your namd and current address on it. Official mail like a recent electric, water, or gas utility bill are commonly used as proof of address. Financial statements, government mail, or housing documents are good options. If you have official online statements, that will work too!

The U.S. Corps of Engineers began developing areas along the Mississippi River to provide more opportunities for local residents to enjoy boating, camping, fishing and picnicking. The project launch for the Shady Creek recreational area began in 1958, and it opened for the first time on August 27, 1960. When Shady Creek opened, the recreational area included a well, toilets, concrete boat launching ramps, two fireplaces, a parking area and six picnic tables.

Shady Creek is located on the Mississippi River about 10 miles east of Muscatine, a short distance off of Highway 22, and remains a popular recreational area.

In our last Throwback Thursday post, Dog 'n' Suds was brought up in the comments. Becca thought it was a dog grooming business, so we thought we'd better set her straight!

Dog 'n' Suds is a midwest drive-in restaurant that got its start in 1953 in Champaign, Illinois. The name came from an architect drawing up plans for the building — he lettered "Dog 'n' Suds" onto the sign, and when asked why, he said, "That's what you're selling": hot dogs and sudsy root beer. The name stuck. The dog mascot even has a name: 'Rover.'

Muscatine got its own Dog 'n' Suds after a 1956 ad in the Muscatine Journal invited locals to open a franchise. By June 1956, Fred Havemann and David Funk had opened one at 1505 Park Avenue — roughly the corner of Park Avenue and Clay Street. David was only involved for the first year, then Fred ran the business until 1962, when Don Sturms took over. By 1971, Muscatine's Dog 'n' Suds was gone.
