Muscatine Community School District

Muscatine Community School District Muscatine Community School District 'Every Student a Success Story.' Located along the Mississippi River in eastern Iowa.

Muscatine Community School District has established a reputation throughout the state of Iowa as a leader in innovative educational practices. In the last several years, Muscatine Schools has implemented a number of innovative programs designed to prepare students for careers in the 21st century. These programs include but are not limited to: 1:1 Initiative, East Campus, Project Lead the Way, and

The Leader in MeTM. Many staff also utilize standards-based grading and competency-based education. Our district is located in the County of Muscatine, Iowa. It includes the towns of Fairport and Montpelier, as well as rural areas of Letts and Blue Grass. We are one of the largest employers in Muscatine, employing over 800 people. The district consists of eight elementary schools (PK-5), two middle schools (6-8), one alternative school, and one high school totaling over 5,300 students. Our district is the first district in the nation to implement The Leader in MeTM program in every elementary school. This is based on the book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People written by Stephen Covey. The high school recently added eight advanced placement classes to its course schedule bringing the total number of AP classes offered to sixteen. This provides students the rigor necessary to leave high school college- and career-ready. The district’s commitment to excellence is evident as it has adopted an ACT testing sequence beginning in 8th – 10th grades with the ACT Aspire test, requiring the ACT test prep course for 11th graders, and finally, all 11th graders will take the ACT test.

BEYOND THE SCREEN

In a classroom inside the science wing at Muscatine High School, the sounds are familiar – the clicking of keyboards, the murmur of strategy and the sudden burst of celebration after a clutch play.

But this isn’t just gaming.

It is teamwork. It is accountability. It is competition.

It is the rapid rise of esports at MHS.

In just two years, Muscatine has brought home a pair of top-three finishes at the state tournament in Rainbow Six Siege.

“It has exceeded what I hoped it would do,” coordinator Joe Vitali said. “I didn’t think it would be this big until like my fourth year. “It has exploded, so I’m not complaining.”

The story touches on:
* How did the program get started?
* Breaking the stigma
* Opportunities beyond high school for esports enthusiasts
* Club funding
* A culture shift

SENIOR SURVIVOR MAKES A SPLASH

The competition is heating up — and cooling off — at Muscatine High School as Senior Survivor continues this week.

Wednesday night’s challenge took place in the pool, where teams had to put their endurance and teamwork to the test. Not only did students have to swim, but they also had to work together to assemble a puzzle — proving that Senior Survivor is just as much about strategy and communication as it is about strength and speed.

From swimming fast to focused problem-solving, our seniors showed determination, resilience and plenty of school spirit. The race is on — who will outlast the rest and be crowned this year’s Senior Survivor champion? Stay tuned!

At the end of the evening, families and friends supporting each of the five teams took a leap into the pool.

This year's five finalists:

Team Pink -- Olive Schmidt and Dash Wiseman (Decoding Dyslexia Iowa)

Team Red -- Shelby Geurink and Haley Brokaw (Humane Society)

Team Black -- Kensley Paul and Andy Franke (Sleep in Heavenly Peace)

Team Green -- Lydia Anderson and Keaton Nienhaus (Flickinger Learning Center)

Team Blue -- Nadiya Lopez and Lillian Skinner (Michaela's Hope)

Team Pink won Wednesday's primary challenge. Brynn Castle filled in as an alternate for Schmidt in the pool.

There will be another challenge Thursday at the Van Hecke Center starting at 8 p.m. The high school student council orchestrates the annual Senior Survivor competition.

CELEBRATING PBIS SUCCESS

Kindergarten through third grade students at Madison Elementary School-Muscatine had an exciting morning on Wednesday as they visited the new MUSCO Dome for a special Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) whole-school celebration! Fourth, fifth and sixth graders are scheduled to visit Thursday.

Students earned this fun reward by working together to fill their school-wide “M” three-quarters of the way with awesome tickets — a true testament to their positive behavior, teamwork and commitment to doing their best each day.

Pickleball, soccer, running and parachute games were among the fun activities offered at the Dome.

We’re so proud of our young learners for showing what it means to be respectful, responsible and ready to learn. Way to go, Madison students — you earned it! 👏💙

HEALTHCARE CAREERS IN FOCUS

Last Friday, iJAG students had the opportunity to hear from a guest speaker representing MercyOne Genesis about the wide range of career paths available in the healthcare field.

Students learned about the growing demand for healthcare professionals, especially as many current workers prepare for retirement in the coming years. The presentation also highlighted scholarship and grant opportunities available to help students pursue careers in healthcare.

In addition, students were introduced to MercyOne Genesis’ hands-on GAIN Camp, a summer experience designed to give participants real-world exposure to healthcare careers. (Camp dates are still to be determined — see attached flyers for more details!)

Thank you to MercyOne Genesis for helping our students explore exciting and in-demand career opportunities!

CENTER STAGE! 🎶 SIX MUSKIES SHINE AT HONOR BAND

Last Saturday, six band students represented Muscatine at the Young Musicians Honor Band in Cedar Rapids.

Those students were 5th graders: Alivia Candela (trombone), Maura Garrett (alto saxophone), Nathaniel Francis (trombone); 6th graders: Brenna Burton (euphonium), Gigi Metcalf (clarinet) and McKenzie Cochran (flute).

Band directors are Miriam Garrett and Nate Rickard.

These students were selected and joined about 120+ other first- and second-year musicians from all over eastern Iowa.

This honor band provides an opportunity for young musicians to have an ensemble experience under the direction of a highly experienced guest conductor in a positive environment and rehearse and perform in a state-of-the-art concert hall. They also got to participate in team-building activities throughout the day. Way to go, musicians!

FINAL ACT

Senior Owen Riley concluded his bowling career for Muscatine High School on Monday morning at the Class 3A state tournament in Waterloo.

Riley bowled games of 207, 233 and 186 for a 626 series in what was a very deep 3A field.

Dubuque Senior's Zach Wlochal opened with a 300 and had a 795 series to lead the field of 32 bowlers. It took a 720 series to make the eight-player bracketed final.

Thank you Owen for your contributions to MHS bowling. He was part of a team state championship last year and finished second at the state-qualifying meet last week!

The 17-year-old recorded a 1,200-pound total and shattered the state deadlift record again (500 pounds). He also registered a 405-pound squat.

Well done, Nabeel. Your grit and grind are paying off in a massive way. Keep crushing it!
