Congratulations to Paisley Satterfield, our August Co-op Student of the Month!

Paisley is a senior who works at Uncle Maddio’s Pizza Restaurant, where she has consistently earned high marks on her performance reviews. Her hard work, dependability, and commitment to doing her best make her a great example of what our Co-op program is all about.

In addition to her success in the workplace, Paisley is also an active member of TSA.

Learning doesn’t stop when the day ends!

We love seeing students take the skills they are learning in their CTE program and apply them in the real world. Brent is doing just that by working on the weekends for privately contracted groups Trinity Industrial Group and DNUS, where he helps clean paint booths.

Brent says that the knowledge he has gained in his Automotive Technology class has prepared him for this role. He has also learned that a strong work ethic, consistency, and time management are key to being successful on the job.

“It’s hard work, but I want to stick with it as long as I can.”

We are proud to see Brent putting his classroom learning into action, gaining valuable work experience, and building skills that will benefit him well beyond high school.

This is what Career Tech is all about- connecting classroom learning to real world opportunities.

Congratulations to Anna Schrier, our August Student of the Month! Anna is a senior Health Science student who was nominated by Dr. Fretwell for her outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to preparing for a career in healthcare.

Anna has excelled throughout her time at MSCA, earning A's in Foundations of Health Science, Medical Terminology, CNA, and two Medical Science Internship courses. After interning at Helen Keller Hospital last year, she will continue gaining valuable clinical experience this semester at North Alabama Medical Center. Anna holds a 4.07 GPA, scored a 28 on the ACT, and earned her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license in May.

Her accomplishments extend well beyond the classroom. Anna has been active in HOSA, SkillsUSA, FCCLA, FBLA, National Honor Society, and National Technical Honor Society, while also participating in numerous leadership and community service activities. This summer, she was selected for two highly competitive healthcare experiences: the University of Alabama Rural Health Scholars Program and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center Summer Health Experience in Oncology.

Anna also works after school and on weekends as a hostess at Southern Grocery. Following graduation, she plans to attend UAB and pursue a career as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

We are proud to recognize Anna for the way she has taken advantage of opportunities both at MSCA and beyond. Congratulations, Anna, on being named our August Student of the Month!

Excited about this new chapter for MSCS!

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. — July 2, 2026 — The Muscle Shoals City Schools Board of Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Jon Bret Smith as the district’s next Superintendent of Education.

Following a comprehensive search process, the Board selected Dr. Smith for his record of educational leadership, his ability to build strong community partnerships, and his success leading school systems through change.

Dr. Smith joins Muscle Shoals City Schools from Lawrence County Schools, where he has served as superintendent since 2017.

Dr. Smith has earned statewide recognition for his leadership and commitment to public education.

He currently serves as District 8 President for the School Superintendents of Alabama, representing educational leaders across the region. His peers named him District 8 Superintendent of the Year in both 2023 and 2026.

In addition to his leadership in K-12 education, Dr. Smith serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama, where he helps prepare future educational leaders.

The Smith family will also be making the move to the Shoals. Their daughter will attend the University of North Alabama this fall, and their son will enroll at Muscle Shoals High School.

“Dr. Smith brings a deep understanding of North Alabama’s educational landscape, a steadfast commitment to student success, and a proven ability to build strong partnerships with educators, families, and the community,” said Clayton Wood, President of the Muscle Shoals City Schools Board of Education. “He understands that every child deserves outstanding instruction every day. We are excited to welcome Dr. Smith to Muscle Shoals and look forward to the vision and leadership he will bring as we continue building on our tradition of excellence.”

Next Steps

Over the coming weeks, the Board of Education will finalize and approve an employment contract with Dr. Smith and begin introducing him to teachers, administrators, community stakeholders, and city leaders. The district looks forward to welcoming Dr. Smith for its annual Institute Day on Aug. 3 as Muscle Shoals City Schools prepares for the start of the 2026–27 school year.

The numbers are in for the MSHS/MSCA Co-Op Program, and the impact has been incredible.

This year, our students contributed more than $2 million in economic impact through work-based learning experiences across our community. This figure is based on the total hours worked by students and gross wages.

More importantly, these students gained real-world experience, developed professional skills, built relationships with employers, and took meaningful steps toward their futures — all while still in high school.

Work-based learning is truly the future of education, and we are thankful for the business and industry partners who continue to invest in our students and provide these opportunities.
