At the Northwest Shoals Community College Police Department, we take training seriously.

All of our Officers attend recert training every year with weapons, Less Lethal, Search & Seizure, Use of Force, etc

Even though our instructors teach the courses, sometimes they become the students.

* At 1127 AM CDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Midway, or near Iuka, moving southeast at 30 mph.

HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Hail damage to vehicles is expected. Expect wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees.

Report Writing for the New Officer Course

The Northwest Shoals Community College Police Department will host a one day Report Writing for the New Officer Course on November 16, 2026. The course will be held at the Northwest Shoals Community College, 75 Student Drive, Building #120, Muscle Shoals, AL, 35661.

The course will begin at 8:00 AM. Refreshments will be served. Class size is limited to 12 participants.

Course Fee: Free

This course is developed for the law enforcement officer as well as correction officers, no matter their years of service, to sharpen their skills as report writers. The Alabama Incident/Offense, Arrest Report, as well as Use of Force Reporting, will be used for the basis of this course.

Report writing is a vital tool for all Law Enforcement and Correction Officers. Most officers don’t receive additional training on report writing once they leave the Basic Law Enforcement/Corrections Academy. This course will help increase the officer’s toolbox of report writing through scenario and video training.

Topics that will be covered:
-Sentence fragments
-Run on sentences
-Comma errors
-Abbreviations
-Product names
-Writing in First Person vs. Third Person
-How to properly review a report before final submission

Each participant will need to bring pens as well as a 1 Subject Notebook.

Advanced Handcuffing for Police & Corrections Course

The Northwest Shoals Community College Police Department will host a one day Advanced Handcuffing for Police & Corrections Course on December 1st, 2026. The course will be held at the Northwest Shoals Community College, Building #120, 75 Student Drive, Muscle Shoals, AL, 35661.

The course will begin at 8:00 AM. Refreshments will be served. Class size is limited to 12 participants. This course is approved for CEUs. The course fee is Free.

Handcuffs are used continuously by Law Enforcement as well as Correction Officers. While Officers use them daily, they don’t usually get updates on the evolution of handcuffs or new training. This course is developed for the law enforcement officer as well as correction officers, no matter their years of service, to sharpen their skills with handcuffs.

Topics that will be covered:
-Evolution of handcuffs
-Modern handcuff construction
-Low-Light handcuffing
-Joint Locks into cuffing
-Take downs into cuffing
-Use of baton to help cuffing

Each participant will need to bring:
-Handcuffs (chain or hinged)
-Handcuff key
-Baton (straight, expandable or PR-24)
-Duty belt with handcuff holder as well as baton holder
-Comfortable Clothing
-Shoes or boots with good ankle support
-Knee pads (Optional, but recommended)
-Note taking material with pen.

**This is a physically demanding course**

Each participant must pass a written test with a score of 80% or better and also proficiency test to pass this course.
