🔥 Muskogee Fire Department’s Mike Haley Named Fire Investigator of the Year! 🔥

The City of Muskogee proudly congratulates Fire Marshal Mike Haley on being named Fire Investigator of the Year by the Oklahoma Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators!

With more than 26 years of experience in the fire service and over six years in fire investigations, Mike has built a reputation for his knowledge, dedication, and willingness to help fellow investigators. His service extends beyond Muskogee, including assisting with state, federal, and tribal investigations and supporting the fire investigation profession throughout Oklahoma.

This recognition reflects not only Mike’s expertise and commitment to his work, but also his dedication to serving others and strengthening the fire investigation community.

Keep Heating Equipment Safe

Throughout Fire Prevention Month, we’re sharing tips from the Fire Marshal’s Office to help protect your home and family.

Keep portable heaters at least 3 feet away from furniture, curtains, bedding, and other combustible materials.

Always turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed. Plug them directly into a wall outlet, not power strips or extension cords.

The fire hydrant series continues with a piece of Muskogee history!

The City’s oldest known fire hydrant was dated 1885, 141 years ago! For perspective, Muskogee was established in 1872, just 13 years before the date on that hydrant.

This hydrant has since been retired and is no longer in service.

Talk to Your Family About Fire Safety.

Throughout Fire Prevention Month, we’re sharing tips from the Fire Marshal’s Office to help protect your home and family.

Children should be taught that matches, lighters, candles, and other ignition sources are not toys.

Make sure everyone in your household knows what the smoke alarm sounds like and understands what to do when it activates.

Also remember that older adults and individuals who may need assistance evacuating should have a specific plan.

A letter to Muskogee Citizens from City Manager Kendal Francis.

Dear Citizens of Muskogee,

As most of you know, the City is facing a significant financial challenge resulting from $29.25 million in court settlements. I understand the frustration and concern surrounding these settlements, particularly because you had no voice in the decisions that led to them. Unfortunately, the settlements must be paid, and how we choose to pay them will impact our community for years to come.

Without another funding source, repayment of these settlements would require a significant increase in property taxes. One option being considered is a temporary sales tax increase to help pay the settlements and reduce or possibly eliminate the burden on property taxpayers. Before moving forward with a potential sales tax election, we want to hear from you.

A Special City Council Meeting will be held on Monday, November 2, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at the Muskogee Civic Center.

During the meeting, we will provide information about the settlements, explain potential repayment options, and seek input from our citizens. Citizens who wish to address the City Council will have an opportunity to sign up and share their comments during the public comment portion of the meeting. Council members will listen to those comments as they consider the City’s next steps.

We recognize that these decisions will affect our entire community. While we cannot change the settlements, we can be transparent about our options, listen to our citizens, and work toward the most responsible solution.
