Bring your whole family to enjoy live performances from the “100 Grand Band,” “Painted Man Band,” Conway High Gold Smoove Drum Line, Coastal High Dance Team and Myrtle Beach Middle Dance Team. Expect food and craft vendors along with a kids’ fun zone from 2 to 7 p.m., Saturday June 20, at Charlie’s Place, 1420 Carver Street. You are invited and encouraged to attend the Monday, March 23, Neighborhood Watch meeting to hear from New Directions of Horry County and the organization's proposal to add a women's center and homeless shelter. The Myrtle Beach Police Department will also present public safety information.

Today (August 26, 2025) marks the 75th anniversary of the raid on Charlie’s Place.

In 1937, Charlie and Sarah Fitzgerald opened Charlie’s Place, also known as Whispering Pines, as a haven for African Americans during segregation. At a time when black performers could entertain crowds in Myrtle Beach but were barred from staying in whites-only hotels, Charlie’s Place became a sanctuary for music, culture, and community.

Legends like Ray Charles, Billie Holiday, Little Richard, and Duke Ellington graced its stage, transforming the venue into a cultural landmark.

Despite facing adversity, including the infamous 1950 raid, Charlie’s Place stood strong. Today, it operates as a museum, honoring the legacy of Charlie and Sarah Fitzgerald and preserving this vital chapter of American history.

We remember, so that we never forget.

Calling all history buffs and podcast lovers! 🎧

One of Myrtle Beach's most historic buildings, Charlie's Place, is being highlighted in a brand new five-part documentary style podcast series called Charlie's Place.

The podcast tells the story of Charlie Fitzgerald, and his noble quest to provide a place for people of all colors to enjoy music in the Jim Crow south. Charlie's Place hosted music legends like Little Richard, Count Basie, Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald and many more. The City of Myrtle Beach's Neighborhood Services Director Cookie Goings explains more about the history of Charlie's Place in this video.

The podcast is a joint partnership between Atlas Obscura, Rococo Punch, Pushkin Industries and Visit Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Myrtle Beach city offices and facilities are closed today, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. Our recreation centers and Chapin Memorial Library will also be closed, and all camps, programs and fitness classes are cancelled. Solid waste services will continue as usual throughout the city.
