So many incredible people come together to make athletics possible for our kids—our generous community business sponsors, loving and dedicated parents, coaches, athletic directors, and, of course, our amazing Boosters.

Have you ever noticed that maps of the world can depict continents and countries in different sizes or proportions? That’s because creating a map of our three-dimensional Earth on a two-dimensional surface is no easy task!

Ms. Whitlock’s Human Geography students got a hands-on lesson in this very challenge today—and yes, it involved dissecting oranges!

Well, sort of.

During today’s lab activity, students used oranges to model the Earth and explored what happens when a curved, three-dimensional surface is transformed into a flat, two-dimensional map. As they carefully peeled and examined their “globes,” students experienced firsthand why cartographers must make choices when creating map projections.

No map can perfectly preserve every characteristic of the Earth. Depending on the projection, the size, shape, distance, or direction of landmasses may be distorted. This is why Greenland, Africa, South America, and other regions can appear dramatically different in size depending on the map being used.

What may have looked like a simple orange-peeling activity was actually a creative way for students to explore an important geographic concept: every map tells a story, but every map also involves some degree of distortion.

Hands-on learning like this helps students move beyond memorizing geographic terms and truly understand the challenges geographers and cartographers face when representing our world. 🌎
