Disney and Pixar’s Cars Is Racing Back Into Theaters! 🏁⚡

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, the original Cars is returning to participating theaters for a limited engagement beginning September 4, 2026.

The return is perfectly timed for Lightning McQueen Day on September 5. Written as 9/5 in the United States, the date honors Lightning McQueen’s iconic racing number, 95. Ka-chow! ⚡

Originally released on June 9, 2006, Cars introduced audiences to hotshot rookie Lightning McQueen, who becomes stranded in the forgotten Route 66 town of Radiator Springs while traveling to the biggest race of his life. Through his friendships with Mater, Sally, Doc Hudson and the town’s colorful residents, McQueen discovers that life is about the journey, not simply crossing the finish line first.

The voice cast includes Owen Wilson as Lightning McQueen, Larry the Cable Guy as Mater, Bonnie Hunt as Sally and racing legend Paul Newman as Doc Hudson. Directed by John Lasseter, produced by Darla K. Anderson and featuring music by Randy Newman, the film won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature and received two Academy Award nominations.

Over the past 20 years, Cars has grown into one of Pixar’s most recognizable franchises, producing two theatrical sequels, Cars Toons, the Disney+ series Cars on the Road and the spectacular Cars Land at Disney California Adventure.

Now a new generation will have the opportunity to experience Lightning McQueen’s original journey on the big screen, while longtime fans can return to Radiator Springs exactly as they first discovered it two decades ago. 🚗🌵

Cars races back into theaters starting September 4, just in time to celebrate Lightning McQueen Day on 9/5. 🏆
