Myrtle Beach City Government Welcome to the City of Myrtle Beach's official page! In 1526, they established the first European settlement in the U.S. about 30 miles to the south.

The City of Myrtle Beach is “First in Service.”

The City of Myrtle Beach is located in the heart of the Grand Strand, a 60-mile stretch of natural beauty on South Carolina's northeastern coast. Our 35,000-plus permanent residents and millions of visitors enjoy wide beaches, warm weather and an incredible range of entertainment, nightlife, golf, shopping, dining and live theatre. History records that a party of Spaniards from Hispaniola were the earliest tourists here, landing first about 50 miles north of present-day Myrtle Beach. That settlement, San Miguel de Guadalupe, was abandoned the next year when they returned to Hispaniola, but the area had been discovered. In the next three centuries, the region's population grew very slowly. By the late 1800s and early 1900s, people began to "vacation" here, although it was quite rustic. Houses and camps were sparse, and there were only few permanent residents at the turn of the century. But, drawn by the ocean, sand and trees, people began to call Myrtle Beach "home" as the 1900s progressed. Myrtle Beach was incorporated in 1938 and became a city in 1957, when the permanent population first topped 5,000. By the way, the name "Myrtle Beach" comes from the wax myrtle, an abundant local shrub, and was chosen in a name-the-town contest in 1900. "Edgewater" finished in second place. Previously, the area had been known as Long Bay, Withers and New Town. For nearly 50 years, Myrtle Beach was a military town, first as home to the U.S. Army Air Corps in the 1940s, and then to the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base beginning in the 1950s. The base closed in 1993, and the property has since been redeveloped as the Market Common District, complete with a Grand Park, recreation fields, a large lake and plenty of walking and bicycling trails. Today, Myrtle Beach is a well-known destination for vacationers from around the country, Canada and abroad. The city's staff is dedicated to being "First in Service" and ready to provide assistance and answer questions. We hope you find this page enjoyable and useful. In case you missed it, Oak Street in Myrtle Beach is back open!

After nine months of construction, the section of Oak Street from Mr. Joe White Avenue to the Nance Plaza parking lot has officially reopened to traffic.

Assistant City Manager Josh Kay talked right before the reopening Friday afternoon about what it means for the city.

The contractor has worked hard to install new underground infrastructure, providing a much-needed replacement since the infrastructure that was underground there had been there since the 1930s. This new infrastructure will service the residents and businesses in the area.

The project also included streetscaping work to build wider sidewalks and new street parking and bike lanes with pavers, plus of course newly paved roads.

This marks the end of this phase of work of downtown revitalization. From here, crews will move on to the area around City Hall, then to Broadway Street from City Hall to Ninth Avenue North.

Please note that the City Services drive-thru is still closed. We still don't have a date for when it will reopen, but stay tuned.

Thank you for your patience during this time of construction, and we hope you enjoy driving on the new and improved section of Oak Street.

Myrtle Beach homeowners: Are you wondering why you saw an increase on your property tax bill? 💴 ⬆️

Here’s why…

For years, Myrtle Beach homeowners have received a TDF property tax credit covering 67.45% of their bill. This year, that credit dropped to 53.4% (for 4% permanent homeowners only).

The Tourism Development Fee (TDF) is a 1% sales tax on purchases made within Myrtle Beach city limits. Last year, it generated a little over $43 million.

Under state law, that money is divided two ways. 80% goes to the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce for out-of-market advertising, and the remaining 20% goes to the City of Myrtle Beach for your property tax credits and, if enough is left over, new projects that improve the city and attract tourism.

Myrtle Beach is growing, and property values have gone up, which means the cost of providing those property tax credits has also gone up.

In fact, the 20% cut has become not enough money for the city to cover property taxes for its permanent residents. The city had to use other money last fiscal year to maintain that roughly 67% credit for you. But continuing to cover that difference simply isn't sustainable.

That's why the credit was reduced to 53.4% this year.

***If you qualify for South Carolina's Homestead Exemption Program, you probably didn't see much change!***

City leaders are working with the Chamber of Commerce and its board to update that 80/20 split, which, as previously mentioned, is established by state law, so City Council can't change it with a simple vote.

It will take cooperation, teamwork and a plan to get a change at the state level. The city is working on it to maintain meaningful property tax relief for residents, while also investing in projects that improve your quality of life.
