Myrtle Beach firefighters provide many special services, such as hazardous materials response and confined spac

e rescue. History:
The Myrtle Beach Fire Department began as a volunteer effort in October 1936, two years before the city's incorporation. The first truck was a 1936 Ford purchased by Myrtle Beach Farms Company. That first fire engine operated out of a wood frame building behind Broadway Restaurant. Back then, when a fire alarm occurred, the first person to reach the fire truck was the one who drove it. The list of fire department charter members includes some familiar area names: H. Walker, Casper P. Benton, Norwood Bellamy, Hoot Gibson, Roscoe Long, Perry Helms, Ralph Veeren, James H. Green, Eli Saleeby, O.C Calloway, Eddie A. Benton, Gary Todd, Clifton Hammond, J.M. Bivens, D.J. Orr, Howell Bellamy and H.C. From those humble beginnings, the fire department has grown into a highly trained and well equipped firefighting and EMS organization. As one of the state's busiest fire department, Myrtle Beach answers more than 10,000 calls for service annually. Today, the city has a state-of-the-art fire fleet and six fire stations. It is with a heavy heart that we share the news regarding the passing of Retired Fire Chief Tom Barstow earlier Monday afternoon following a hospitalization over the weekend during his continued bout with cancer.

Chief Barstow worked for the City of North Myrtle Beach from 1980-2015 promoting through the ranks until his appointment as Fire Chief and Emergency Preparedness Director in 1996, where he served until his retirement in February 2015.

The City of North Myrtle Beach is forever indebted to Chief Barstow and his service to our Department and City.

Station 3 temporarily took care of a newborn kitten yesterday, after it was found and brought to the firehouse by a member of the public. Before Animal Patrol took possession of the kitten, Engine 3 made sure to inaugurate the little guy as the firehouse's newest Probie!
