Naches Firefighters' Association awarded Grant for Increased Operational Readiness

This past week, the Naches Firefighters' Association received a $9,500 Grant award from Yakama Nation's Legends Casino Hotel Yakama Cares Grant program for a powered stretcher for our transport-capable rescue vehicle. Our current stretcher is an older model that requires manual operations and multiple people to operate. The newer power stretcher is easier to operate and load into our transport vehicle. A huge thank you to Firefighter/EMT-IV Michelle Swanson for writing this grant for us!

While we are not a transporting agency, we have the ability and are feeling the need to better serve the citizens of the fire district. Over the past several months, we have seen an increase in wait times for an available ambulance from the county's sole-source ambulance provider and multiple situations where ambulances just were not available. We even had a scenario a couple weeks ago where the ambulance responding to our call was delayed and other, more critical calls were occurring in the county with no ambulances available. In that scenario, we chose to transport our patient to the hospital ourselves so the other more critical calls in the county could receive the ambulance they needed more. In that scenario, we were even able to start an IV on the way to the hospital to provide the patient some much needed fluids.

Naches Fire continues to seek out ways to better care for our citizens and provide the best care we are capable of with a dedicated crew of volunteers. If you are interested in joining our team, reach out to us today!

This morning Naches Valley School District brought Kindergarten classes from Naches Valley Elementary School in for a station tour! Kiddos checked out all the equipment and spent some time in the EDITH home learning about fire safety, specifically in the home setting including not opening warm doors and crawling under smoke. A huge thank you to Gleed Fire Department DC Knapp and crew for taking the kids through the house!

There remains the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening as the region sits between weather systems to the north and south. Thunderstorms will start across central and eastern Oregon this afternoon then slowly spread north across northeast Oregon and southeast Washington through the late evening. The main threat will be strong winds, frequent lightning, hail, and brief heavy downpours. Make sure to stay weather aware and have multiple ways of receiving weather warnings, alerts, and information.

ESTIMATED POWER RESTORAL EXTENDED - 5/25 @ 0300 hrs

Our partners at Highland Fire Department responded to a fire in the substation in Tieton shortly after the power went out this afternoon. This outage is affecting over 1200 subscribers west of Naches and the Nile Valley. With Pacific Power extending the estimated restoration to May 25th at 0300, we wanted to drop a reminder about generator safety 👇👇👇👇

So it begins. Yesterday Your Selah Fire Department was dispatched to a fire on Sage Trail Rd in East Selah. With the help of our mutual aid partners, Gleed Fire Department, Naches Fire Department, Federal Firefighters of Yakima IAFF Local F-295, Washington State Department of Natural Resources we were able to stop the fire without any loss of structure and no injury to firefighters or home/property owners. Thank you to all involved.

Also just a reminder that when we have a fire, it is not a good time to go take a drive in that area. We know people are curious, but when people drive close to fire scenes it can impede firefighting operations and put everyone at risk of injury.

Naches Fire has acquired more new nozzles to our fire fighting arsenal. First, we have purchased 2, red colored, Elkhart Brass, Chief XD, combination nozzles. We use matching colored hose, pump controls, and nozzles, (Orange or Red), to make communications between the pump operator and nozzleman more simplified. All of our 1-3/4" attack line nozzles are rated to flow 160gpm at 50psi.
Secondly, we purchased 2 new 2-1/2" Elkhart Brass, XD smooth bore nozzles, yellow colored. They are rated to flow a whopping 300gpm at 50psi! (Big Fire needs Big Water). We will place these in service on our 2-1/2" blitz lines on each engine.
You may have noticed that all these nozzles are designed to operate at 50psi, with significant water flows. This allows easier handling for the firefighters, easier pump operating for the engineer, and the pump itself doesn't have to work as hard.
I would like to thank Kyley Erickson of Seawestern Yakima who helped in making this purchase possible and Elkhart Brass for the nozzles and training videos.
