A professional photographer got some amazing shots of our boat crews carrying out surf training at the tail end of Hurricane Erin on August 22nd. Views from shore really put things in perspective! 🌊🌊🌊

Thank you so much Wes Snyder Photography for capturing these!

Here is a first person point of view from our lifeboat operating in surf today in the wake of Hurricane Erin. The storm has passed but offshore sea state is still extremely dangerous.

For those wondering: Oregon Inlet is in Nags Head, North Carolina. This footage is of a training evolution on our 47 foot motor lifeboat in the surf zone. Crews must “square up” to waves of this caliber, as striking them anywhere but the bow could knock down or roll over the vessel. We train in these conditions as mayday calls don’t only come in when the water is calm.

What you’re seeing here is the point of view of a stern lookout crewman (backwards facing) during an inbound run of the inlet in surf conditions this weekend. Running inbound is a delicate dance of timing, speed, and evasive maneuvers. Surf here at Oregon Inlet is sporadic and unpredictable compared to many other inlets, so when conditions arrive we’re sure to be out there training!

We’ve been having a blast hosting Camp SALT through the Dare County Sheriff’s Office! DCSO deputies have brought groups of campers to our station to learn about what the Coast Guard does, familiarize children with marine safety, take a boat ride and even learn how to throw a rescue line. Hope y’all are having a fun and safe summer 😎

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Pictured is Station crews conducting training towing evolutions as well as man overboard recoveries.
“Break-Ins” is a term for new members who are working on obtaining a qualification. Our break-ins had their work cut out this day, conducting nearly 20 evolutions making the towing bitt and numerous personnell recoveries from the lifeboat recess. They will absolutely be relying on this training in a real scenario at their time at Oregon Inlet.
