😾 Bad Kitty! New York Times best-selling author Nick Bruel spent time at George W. Miller and Highview Elementary this week and offered students the “secret to writing stories.”

“Always ask yourself questions,” Bruel explained as he led students through an exercise where they pieced together ideas to create their own tales.

For one third-grade class, that meant developing the story of an angry turtledove yelling at an uninvited squirrel. (Don’t worry — they worked it out.)

According to Bruel, the best way to get past a blank page is to come up with the title first, which helps determine which questions to ask. The title of his latest book, released last month, is Bad Kitty Gets a Job, and students had the opportunity to hear Bruel read a chapter aloud.

Another secret? Bruel said he doesn’t think of Bad Kitty as just a cat. “I think of her as a kid shaped like a cat.”

The visit wrapped up with a Bad Kitty sketch demonstration — and, of course, plenty of student questions.

Thank you to Mr. Bruel and Nanuet Elementary Librarian Jodi Hink for organizing the visit.

“In high school, you really do form a community. You can make an impact on others.”

Katie Schmid, Class of 2026 co-valedictorian, has been making an impact on the Nanuet school community since Kindergarten. In addition to being a National Merit Commended Student and AP Scholar, she is a three-season athlete, captain of the cross-country team, vice president of Model UN, news and features editor of The Knight Times and an accomplished vocalist — who just last week won the National Chorus Award alongside classmate Cindy Mazariego Angamarca.

“Music has been such a big part of my life,” said Schmid, who plans to continue singing at Wesleyan University. “I want to do either a choral or a ca****la group, because I know the community you build.”

Community is a word Schmid uses often. When reflecting on her accomplishments, she turns the attention away from herself and toward those who have supported her.

“I’m obviously proud of myself, but I am grateful for my teachers, friends and, of course, family,” she said. “They have always been there for me. Whether it’s a meet or an awards ceremony, they always have my back. They’re proud of me, but they also push me to do things that I’m passionate about. I’m glad I can do it for them.”

At Wesleyan, Schmid will study psychology — a passion fueled in part by AP Psychology, taken online through Nanuet’s Virtual High School (VHS) offerings, and by her desire to help others.

Advice to freshman self:
“I would say it’s OK to struggle. I thought struggling in or out of class meant you were failing. It may sound cliché, but it’s OK to put yourself out there and do things that challenge you. That means you’re learning.”

A memory:
“I’m proud of how much our track team has grown and how far we’ve come. In a recent race, I was about 100 meters from the finish, and my friend was filming me. I was sprinting, and in the video you can hear my entire team cheering, ‘Go Katie, go!’ It made me feel so loved and supported.”

Thank you:
Mr. Androsko, teacher and Model UN adviser — a club she credits with helping her build confidence and public speaking skills — as well as Mr. Salerno, Ms. Grymes and the entire English Department.

Congratulations to our most recent D.A.R.E. America International graduates. Sixth graders from A. MacArthur Barr Middle School who participated in the spring cohort were recognized yesterday for successfully completing the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program.

Surrounded by their families, teachers, administrators, local government officials, and law enforcement, students shared essays, poems, and words of encouragement as part of the celebration.

Since the start of the year, our newest graduates have been working with Clarkstown Police Department D.A.R.E. Officer Gavin, learning facts and skills designed to help them avoid unhealthy behaviors and navigate challenging situations. The program also emphasized the importance of communicating feelings and responding thoughtfully in stressful moments.

Guests included Town of Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann, who reminded students, “The choices and decisions you make now are going to impact you for the rest of your life. Remember these lessons and make the right choices.”

A special thank you to our administration for bringing this important curriculum into our classrooms, and to everyone who attended and supported today’s event.

"It had always been clear to my parents and those around me that I was going to end up studying civil engineering, but I was kind of in denial.” Despite a childhood filled with Legos and building sketches, Matthew Rogers, Nanuet’s 2026 co-valedictorian and future Manhattan University Jasper, said he was unsure of his career path when he began touring colleges.

“I was visiting schools for political science or anything else. I really wasn’t into engineering at all.”

Everything changed when he attended the Tri-State Engineering Expo in White Plains at the recommendation of physics teacher, Dermot Heraghty.

“That experience really pushed me to say, ‘OK, I’m going to do that. I’m going to go for civil engineering.’”

The expo also helped him decide where he would attend college, selecting Manhattan from a list of impressive schools.

“The thing that stood out to me was the alumni connections and the people. It felt like Nanuet — a small district where everyone is close. Because of that, it offers so much.”

An AP Scholar, National Merit Finalist and Rensselaer Medalist, Rogers has made a significant impact at Nanuet. Just last week, he received a technology scholarship from the Lower Hudson Council of School Superintendents. Beyond the classroom, he is an Eagle Scout, a violinist who has performed with NYSSMA and serves as president of Model UN.

“I’ve been in the club since freshman year, when there were maybe 10 to 12 people at meetings. Now we’re around 75 members. Part of that growth came from me stepping into a leadership role and helping expand the club. Model UN was my focus during high school, and it helped make me a strong public speaker, build friendships and become the person I am today.”

Memorable moment: The physics class trip to Six Flags.

Advice to freshman self: Everything is worth it. It all works out. I always try to keep a positive mindset. That became especially important to me during my Eagle Scout board review.

Thank you: Mr. Heraghty, for setting me on the path toward my future; Mrs. Murphy, for making Earth science a meaningful experience and recommending me for the Rensselaer Medal and orchestra teacher Mrs. Lucksom.

The Nanuet Senior High School Class of 2026 graduates in just over two weeks! Ahead of the pomp and circumstance, we sat down with several seniors to reflect on their time at Nanuet and discuss their future plans. First up in our profile series is Elaine Gong, who will enter Binghamton University in the fall with plans to study biological science and public health.

“I was a member of the Nanuet Ambulance Corps for three years, and that really helped solidify my interest in medicine,” says Gong. “I was able to experience firsthand the helping aspects of patients and then the community. They were all close and never had any judgment with helping patients and I really liked that.”

Helping others has been a staple of Gong’s time here in Nanuet. She cites the “Big Musicians” program as one of her most memorable experiences.

“I got to be involved with the musical aspect of our school and contribute in that way and teach the younger kids how to play their instrument and different skill sets.”

Gong, who received several recognitions and honors during the Senior Awards ceremony held last month, is also involved in the Student Senate, where she helped organize several senior events like the prom.

Elaine’s three reflections:

⚫ A memorable aspect of your K-12 experience: "I really enjoyed playing (flute) for the musicals. It was different, playing with the orchestra, then I'm used to. And the theater itself was really welcoming. Everyone was very nice and welcoming.”

🟡 Advice to high school freshmen self? “Always reach out to others for help and if you're interested in something, reach out. Find your own opportunities. No one else is going to be there to do it for you.”

⚫ Thank you to: Mr Andrasko. He was a guiding hand through the Senate, which helped build my leadership skills. I was able to put my own thoughts into decision making and help cater to the whole student body.”

“Make correct choices—wrong ones can have life-altering consequences.” Speaking to the Nanuet Senior High School Class of 2026, James Fay, Clarkstown Police Chief and Nanuet alumnus, reminded students about the dangers of impaired, distracted and drunk driving. Fay’s remarks came during a powerful accident-scene demonstration held this morning at the Outdoor Education Center.

Presented in partnership with the Town of Clarkstown, the event gave seniors a firsthand look at the aftermath of a DWI crash. The realistic reenactment included emergency response teams, an arrest, and even an arraignment—offering a stark, emotional illustration of the consequences of reckless choices behind the wheel.

“Build on the lessons you learned in DARE,” said Fay, one of several speakers during the event. Another was Anastasia Karassik, president of the Larisa Karassik Foundation, who shared her family’s tragedy after losing her daughter to a drunk and drug-impaired driver.

“It is up to you. Through you, we are creating awareness,” Karassik said. “We hope you carry this message to your friends.”

Several members of our teaching, counseling, and social work staff were present to provide emotional support to students during the presentation. Mike Mahoney also addressed the students, reminding them that drunk driving remains one of the leading causes of death among teenagers.

Thank you to our student volunteers and the following organizations for their partnership in delivering this powerful and essential life lesson:

Town of Clarkstown
Clarkstown Police Department
Nanuet Fire Department
Nanuet Community Ambulance Corps.
Rockland County Government
Rockland County District Attorney's Office

👏 Congratulations to the latest Mu Alpha Theta inductees. The math honor society, formed in 1957, celebrates exemplary mathematicians from around the world and boasts more than one hundred thousand members. Over 40 students were recognized in front of classmates on Friday during a ceremony led by Math Department Coordinator (7–12) Joseph Ryan. After receiving their certificates, members elected new officers for the 2026–27 school year.

🏀⚾🏒 Youth sports — too intense, or just enough? At A. MacArthur Barr Middle School, Mrs. Stefanoff’s seventh-grade ELA classes recently participated in a Socratic Seminar examining the growing intensity of youth sports. Through research and interviews, students considered the impact of sports on student well-being, character development, and family life, as well as the balance between travel and recreational leagues.

The seminar, conducted in the round, provided students with an opportunity for thoughtful discussion as they practiced collaborative dialogue, active listening, open-mindedness, and supporting ideas with both facts and personal experience.

Comments such as, “It is too expensive and takes time away from your ability to do other things,” were countered with, “If you love the sport you play, then maybe you won’t want additional free time.”

Stefanoff said a special highlight was the presence of parents as audience members. “While families often cheer on their children from the sidelines, the bleachers, the auditorium, and other venues, they do not often get the opportunity to cheer them on in academic settings.”

Inviting parents to observe gave students an authentic audience and offered families a unique opportunity to watch their children think critically, communicate effectively, and shine in the classroom
