NEWS is dedicated to providing safety, hope, healing and empowerment for survivors of domestic and sexual abuse. NEWS believes that those who have become victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse have the power to strengthen and heal. Every day we bring respect, understanding, and resources to survivors, because we believe with kindness and supp

ort, we can create peaceful homes. NEWS was formed in 1981 when a group of community members realized there was no safe place for women and children to go when they were fleeing abuse at home. Volunteers had been taking battered women and their children into their own homes to protect them, and the need for a safe shelter was clear. Our founders worked in partnership with local leaders to acquire a house where women and children could find safety and support, and begin the process of rebuilding their lives. Today NEWS has grown into a strong organization with a dedicated group of staff and volunteer domestic violence and sexual assault counselors, providing direct client services as well as shelter 24 hours a day/7 days a week, to approximately 1300 people each year. NEWS’ Programs include Court Advocacy, Housing, Children Exposed to Domestic Violence Services, Sexual Assault Victims Services, Support Groups, and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Advocacy. Support for NEWS comes from many sources. The largest portion of our funding comes from grants from federal, state, and local sources such as the Auction Napa Valley. Our community fundraising events make up part of our budget, and we depend on the generosity of individuals and community groups who support us in our mission.

45 Years of Hope | From the Archives 💜

Where it all began.

In August 1982, NEWS hosted its very first fundraisers, The Great Napa Valley Taste-Off at Silverado Country Club.

Guests gathered for an evening of wine, cheese, and community, with tickets costing just $10. Wineries from across Napa Valley generously donated their wines, and every dollar raised supported survivors seeking safety, shelter, and hope.

As we looked through these photos, we couldn't help but smile at the familiar names on the winery list. So many of these wineries helped lay the foundation for the work NEWS continues today.

Forty-five years later, that same spirit of generosity still defines our community. To every winery, volunteer, donor, advocate, and supporter who has walked alongside NEWS over the years, thank you. You've helped create hope for thousands of survivors and their families.

Here's to honoring where we started, celebrating how far we've come, and continuing the work together.

💙 Do you recognize anyone in these photos or remember this event? We'd love to hear your memories in the comments.

Every young person deserves to know what a healthy relationship looks like.

Through Youth Matter, NEWS provides education and one-on-one support in 15 middle and high schools across Napa County. Our advocates help students recognize healthy relationships, understand boundaries and consent, identify warning signs of abuse, and know where to turn for help.

Prevention works. Youth Matter reaches young people early so we can build safer relationships, stronger connections - and healthier futures for our kids and community.

45 Years of Hope | From the Archives

Forty-five years ago, this headline marked a new chapter for Napa County.

On October 5, 1981, NEWS opened the doors to Napa County's first confidential shelter for survivors of domestic violence. The following day, The Napa Register shared the story with the community.

What began as a grassroots effort fueled by compassion and determination has grown into an organization providing safety, advocacy, counseling, prevention education, housing support, youth services, and hope for thousands of survivors.

Throughout our 45th anniversary, we'll be sharing moments from our history and celebrating the people, partners, and community who have helped shape NEWS over the past four and a half decades.

Here's to 45 years of hope... and to the future we're building together. 💜

45 Years of Light. Countless stories of hope.

Since opening our doors in 1981, we've walked alongside survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse, providing safety, advocacy, hope, and healing to thousands of individuals and families throughout our community.

Over the coming months, we'll celebrate the people, partnerships, and moments that have shaped our journey, while looking ahead to the future we're building together.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of these first 45 years.

Every child deserves to arrive at camp feeling like they belong.

Camp Camino is a week of laughter, creativity, adventure, healing, and friendship for children connected to NEWS. Before camp begins, we're hoping to send every camper with a backpack filled with supplies they can call their own.

A backpack may seem simple, but it helps a child arrive feeling prepared, included, and excited for the week ahead.

If you'd like to help, we've created an Amazon Wish List with the items our campers need most. Every purchase ships directly to NEWS and goes straight into a camper's backpack.

💜 Thank you for helping children begin Camp Camino knowing their community is behind them.
