As Affordable Housing Month comes to a close, we want to end with one big question:

Why can’t we just create more affordable housing?

The short answer is: we can. But it takes a lot of pieces coming together.

Affordable housing needs land, funding, community support, strong partnerships, and a long-term commitment to keeping homes affordable for the people who need them.

Creating affordable housing can mean building new homes, preserving the affordable homes we already have, and investing in innovative solutions that help people find stability in different ways.

One example is home sharing, which helps connect people who have extra space in their homes with people looking for an affordable place to live. It can support seniors, workers, students, and others while making better use of existing housing in our community.

Building affordable housing is different from building market-rate housing. The rent is intentionally kept lower so families, seniors, workers, veterans, and others can afford to live there. That means these homes usually need public funding, grants, tax credits, local investment, and partnerships to make the numbers work.

It also takes time. Affordable housing efforts often involve planning, design, financing, permits, community meetings, construction, and long-term property management.

So, what do we need to create more affordable housing?

We need communities that say yes to housing.

We need funding that matches the real cost of building and preserving homes.

We need available land and policies that make affordable housing possible.

We need creative solutions like home sharing, housing navigation, and partnerships that help people access the homes and resources already in our community.

We need partners, donors, cities, counties, businesses, and neighbors working together.

And we need to remember who this is for: the people who make our community home.

Affordable housing helps children stay in their schools, workers live near their jobs, seniors remain housed with dignity, and families build stability for the future.

At Napa Valley Community Housing, we believe that creating and preserving affordable housing is one of the most important ways we can keep Napa Valley strong, connected, and welcoming.

Affordable Housing Month may be ending, but the need for safe, stable homes continues every day.

May is Affordable Housing Month, so let’s answer another common question:

Who is affordable housing for?

Affordable housing is for people and families whose income falls within certain limits. Those limits are usually based on the local Area Median Income, or AMI.

AMI is a way of looking at what households typically earn in a specific area. Because every community is different, income limits are different from place to place and can also depend on household size.

In simple terms:
A family of four may qualify at a different income level than a single person. A senior on a fixed income may qualify differently than a working family. And each affordable housing property or program may have its own specific requirements.

So, who can affordable housing serve?

It can serve working families, seniors, veterans, people with disabilities, farmworkers, service workers, young adults, and many others who may not be able to afford market-rate housing in their community.

What do people get if they qualify?

They do not usually get “free housing.” Instead, they may qualify for a home where the rent is set at a more affordable level based on the program, property, household size, and income guidelines.

That can mean more stability, more breathing room in the monthly budget, and a safer place to build a life.

Affordable housing helps people stay connected to their jobs, schools, families, doctors, and communities. And in a place like Napa Valley, that matters for all of us.

May is Affordable Housing Month, and we’re starting with the basics:

What is affordable housing?

A common definition comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD: housing is generally considered affordable when a household pays no more than 30% of its income toward housing costs, including utilities.

Put simply: affordable housing means people can pay for a safe, stable home and still have enough left for groceries, transportation, healthcare, childcare, school supplies, and everyday life.

That matters because when housing costs are too high, families may have to make impossible choices between rent and other basic needs.

Affordable housing helps children have a steady place to learn and grow. It helps workers live near the communities they serve. It helps seniors remain housed with dignity. And it helps keep Napa Valley strong, connected, and welcoming.

At Napa Valley Community Housing, we believe housing is more than a roof. It is the foundation for stability, opportunity, and community.

Throughout May, we’ll be sharing more about affordable housing, why it matters, and how it supports the people who make Napa Valley home.
