Say hello to Monica Koenig, First 5 Napa County Commission member! 👋

Monica was inspired by the work First 5 was doing both statewide and right here in our community. Through her work with the Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Program, she has been a longtime partner of First 5, sharing our commitment to helping pregnant moms and children stay healthy, supported, and thriving.

For Monica, a big part of that work is focusing on the first 1,000 days of a child’s life—a critical time for healthy development and building a strong foundation for the years ahead. 💚

In 1995, Dolly Parton started mailing books to children in her home county to inspire children to love reading in honor of her dad, who couldn’t read or write.

That idea lives here too. Every month, 1,700 families in Napa County find a book in the mailbox — because of neighbors who fund it, volunteers who run it, and a woman from Sevier County, TN who started it all.

✨ Meet the People Behind First 5 Napa! ✨

Today we’re so happy to introduce you to Katherine Van Treese, our wonderful Programs Coordinator! 💛

A true Napa Valley native, Katherine grew up in St. Helena and attended local public schools. She went on to earn her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Teaching and her teaching credentials from the University of San Diego.

She spent four years teaching middle school at a charter school in Vallejo before coming back home to Napa, where she taught at Redwood Middle School for nine years.

Katherine is also a proud mom to two elementary-aged daughters, giving her an even more personal connection to the families and children she serves. 💕

Since joining First 5 Napa in fall 2025, Katherine has brought so much heart, passion and dedication to our team. She cares deeply about the programs we offer and the families we serve, and she has played such an important role in helping bring many of our programs and initiatives to life.

We are so lucky to have Katherine on our team. Her passion for advocating for local children and families shines through in everything she does, and we’re grateful for the heart she brings to First 5 every day. 💚

First 5 Napa County is offering a FREE Doula Training Program for people who are passionate about supporting families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Selected participants receive doula training at no cost, plus an 8-month workforce development program with mentorship, business development, and Medi-Cal enrollment support.

You don’t have to know exactly where this opportunity will lead. You just have to be brave enough to start. 💪✨

📚✨ Big conversations can start with a good book.

Registration is now open for Belonging Through Books—a FREE series for parents and caregivers of children ages 5 and younger.

Together with Dr. Lori A. Watson, families will explore ways to talk about race, identity, and belonging through children’s books and meaningful conversation in a welcoming, supportive space.

Every family who participates will receive:
💛 Diverse children’s books to take home
🍽️ Free dinner at each session
🌎 English and Spanish interpretation
📖 Two sessions at the location you choose

With multiple dates and locations available, we hope you’ll find one that fits your schedule. Children are encouraged to attend and learn alongside their grown-ups!

✨ Meet the People Behind First 5 Napa ✨

Meet Jessica Arechiga Solano, one of our incredible Community Stewards! 💙

If you’ve met Jessica at one of our events, you’ve probably been greeted with her warm smile. She has a way of making people feel welcome, and that comes naturally because being a mom is at the heart of who she is.

Jessica absolutely adores her two kids and loved spending the last several years as a stay-at-home mom. That experience gave her a deep appreciation for the importance of support, connection, and having a community to lean on during the early years of parenting.

Before becoming a full-time mom, Jessica studied Criminal Justice and later returned to school to study Addiction Studies, hoping to one day work with youth.

Today, she’s found the perfect fit at First 5 Napa, where she gets to support families and help parents feel confident and connected.

📚 Her favorite children’s book? If You Give a Mouse a Cookie—a classic that’s just as fun to read today as it was growing up! 🐭🍪

We’re so grateful Jessica is part of the First 5 Napa family, and we know the families she meets feel the same. 💛
