Gone, but never forgotten.

Today, we pause to remember those in Naperville and across the country who gave their lives in service to America. The annual Memorial Day parade is a chance to tell our Gold Star families that their loved one’s sacrifice wasn’t in vain but instead remains the foundation of our freedom – a freedom we will never take for granted.

Seeing Naperville come out to honor those who were lost reminds us all how important it is to come together as a community during these moments, especially during the 250th anniversary of America’s founding. This weekend, the Fort Payne Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution dedicated a plaque honoring our nation’s first veterans: American Revolutionary soldiers, sailors, and contributing citizens. This meaningful gesture reminds us of our past and of those who, from the earliest days of our country, believed so strongly in freedom that they were willing to fight for it, and in some cases, lay down their lives for it.

I encourage everyone to take a moment today -- and every day -- to remember and honor the lost and their families. Naperville will never forget.

May is an especially busy month for public service recognitions, and it was a privilege to present a proclamation to the men and women of our very own Naperville Police Department last week during 2026's Police Week. And just yesterday, I was able to visit with many of our Public Works employees to acknowledge their contributions during National Public Works Week.

While these national weeks are important reminders to stop and recognize the many different people and departments that make our city run, these are the people who, year-round, make Naperville the exceptional city that it is. Whether it's our first responders or our Public Works crews, their public service is the backbone of Naperville. And that's worth celebrating all year long!

Last Friday, I joined Consul General Anton Lungu to celebrate a ceremonial raising of the flag of the Republic of Moldova at the Consulate General of the Republic of Moldova. It’s been a year since the consulate office opened in north Naperville, helping to strengthen our city’s ties with the global community. These partnerships help bring new economic and cultural opportunities to regions, and Naperville is proud to be home to Moldova’s Chicago consulate. Friday’s flag raising was a chance to celebrate their presence and continue deepening our connections with each other.

Naperville has always been defined by the people who show up for our kids - and nobody exemplifies that more than Seth Brady. Twenty-two years in the classroom. Courses in peace studies, world religions, anthropology - subjects that challenge kids to see the world differently and care about it. And if that weren’t enough, Seth helped create the Illinois Global Scholar Certificate, changing how students across the entire state learn. That’s the kind of teacher - and the kind of person - who changes lives. Congratulations, Mr. Brady on being named Illinois Teacher of the Year. All of Naperville is proud of you!

It was a privilege late last week to honor two professional city staff groups who dedicate their lives to serving others, whether our residents or the animals they love.

This week is both National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week and Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week. Our telecommunicators, our “heroes with headsets,” answer 911 calls and dispatch our police and fire crews to the scene of an emergency. They are the calm voice on the other end of the line, helping people in the first seconds of life's most challenging moments.

Our Animal Control officers enforce laws related to animal control and welfare, and they promote responsible pet ownership and care through education and enforcement. They also rescue stray or injured animals and offer guidance on coexisting with local wildlife.

Thank you to these heroes of who help everyone in their time of need.

Congratulations to the Veterans Clubs of Naperville Central and Naperville North High School in their nomination for the Kids Matter - Kindness Counts Award!

The Kindness Counts Award nomination requirement is beautifully simple: how did a person or a group of people spread kindness and how did that kindness impact others?

With a total of around 260 students from both high schools, each and every student has certainly spread kindness in the Naperville community. From hosting guest Veteran speakers to volunteering at hospitals and raising money for veteran-centered services, these students have truly gone above and beyond in their contributions.

Not only have these students given back to their community, their impact has inspired others. In response to the compassion demonstrated by Naperville high schoolers, Waubonsie Valley High School and Benet Academy have begun to develop their own veterans clubs.

It is an honor to nominate Naperville Central and Naperville North High Schools for this esteemed recognition. Thank you for your time and efforts - keep up the good work!

Earlier today, I had the solemn honor of standing before Naperville’s Gold Star families and veterans to observe National Vietnam War Veterans Day. Eleven young men from our community made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country during the Vietnam War, and many Vietnam veterans who did return safely home did not hear the words “thank you” enough.

Our community recognizes that “Freedom isn’t free.” Today and every day, we honor all veterans and Gold Star Families who served in global conflicts for their courage, dedication, and sacrifice.

This week, I’m starting something new: a round-up post of events I’ve been to over the past week or two. There’s always something going on in Naperville, and it’s important to me to share the faces and places I see as your mayor. So, enjoy this new feature, and I hope to see you while I’m out and about!

What's featured:
• Honoring Naperville’s Rosemary Macko Wisnosky for over 46 years of service to the community on March 18, including her work as a founding member of the Naperville Sister Cities Commission in 1993. Rosemary helped establish the partnership between Naperville and Nitra, Slovakia, our first Sister City, and later earned recognition as an Honorary Citizen of Nitra in 2000 and a Medal of Honor from the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Washington, D.C. in 2001. From 2012 until Jan. 29, 2026, she served as Honorary Consul of the Slovak Republic. Thank you, Rosemary, for your civic leadership and volunteerism!

• Recognizing local students on March 20 for their entries into the Naperville Sister Cities Young Artists and Authors Showcase.

• Taking part on March 22 in Judd Kendall VFW Post #3873 and American Legion Post #43’s Veteran Su***de Prevention RUCK. The event raises awareness to prevent death by su***de among veterans and active duty military; participants are encouraged to “carry” what they can and what will represent how they feel they can help and contribute to the cause. From empty f***y packs and a full heart to 60 lb. packs, it was an important morning for an important cause.

It’s a three-peat!

This weekend, I learned that Naperville was once again named the Best City to Live in America by Niche.com, making 2026 the third year in a row for this honor. We were also named the #1 Best City to Raise a Family in America and #1 City with the Best Public Schools in America for the sixth year running, and the #1 Best City to Buy a House in America for the second year in a row. We also improved on a previous ranking by being named the #13 Healthiest Place to Live and the #13 Healthiest City in America.

As if that wasn’t enough, I also found out that B2B Reviews ranked us as the 10th Best City for Small Business in the U.S.

None of these accolades happens by chance. They are the result of the foundation built by those leaders, residents, and businesses who came before us: people who believed in making long-term decisions for the good of those they would never meet, but still cared deeply about. All of us should celebrate these awards, because it is all of us – the residents, businesses, our professional city staff, dedicated police and fire departments, social service agencies, schools, parks, libraries, and volunteers – who contribute daily to Naperville’s success and lay the foundation for the next generation of leaders.

Congratulations, , for setting the standard for excellence.
