As we celebrate Literacy and Numeracy Week, we want to recognize the hard work of our teachers and faculty. According to the Nation’s Report Record, only one state outpaces us in 8th grade reading scores, and only four states outpace us in 8th grade math scores, and we’re dedicated to moving forward.

126 years ago today, after a decades-long suffrage movement, women across the country earned the right to vote. Today and every day, we recognized the dedication of the women that came before us, as well as the continued fight for gender equality in the U.S.

On August 22-23, 1791, in what is now the Republic of Haiti, an uprising that would lead to the eventual abolition of the transatlantic slave trade occurred. Today, we remember all of the lives lost on the transatlantic trade route and in enslavement across the world. We must continue the work to abolish human exploitation, and ensure every American and Illinoisan is free.

Recognized on August 17, National Nonprofit Day commemorates the enduring and transformational work of nonprofits lifting up people across the country. Here in Illinois, we partner with many nonprofits to inform policymakers about critical issues and the best ways to address them. Here at home, we will just celebrated the heroes of our nonprofits at our Heroes & Helicopter's event and I am proud to work with groups like these every day.

Unfortunately, Senator Ellman and I have made the tough call to cancel tomorrow's Heroes & Helicopters event. According to the National Weather Service, the weather tomorrow looks to be rainy with a good chance for thunderstorms throughout the day.

We know many of you were looking forward to joining us, and we’re disappointed that we won’t be able to gather with you tomorrow. With the safety and comfort of our community, first responders, volunteers, and everyone attending in mind, we felt canceling was the right decision.

We’re grateful to everyone who helped make this event possible and to all of you who planned to join us. We hope to see you and your family at a future event soon.

Until then, please stay dry and safe this weekend!

New law. New opportunities.
House Bill 3460 is officially law, creating paid apprenticeship pathways that allow future barbers, cosmetologists, estheticians, and nail technicians to learn, earn, and build their careers—all at the same time.
Another step toward expanding opportunity and strengthening Illinois’ workforce.

The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration, established by George Washington to honor those wounded or killed in combat. Since its launch in 2021, Operation Purple Heart has returned hundreds of Purple Hearts to veterans and their families.
Thank you to all who have risked their lives for our freedom, and especially those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
